The FBI recently disrupted a China-linked cyber operation that was targeting U.S. government agencies, critical infrastructure, and other sensitive organizations. The group behind the operation, known as QTFY, used specialized platforms to scan the internet for vulnerable systems and route malicious activity through compromised devices, proxy services, and leased servers. By disguising where the traffic was actually coming from, attackers could make their activity appear more like legitimate internet traffic and make detection significantly more difficult.

For technology leaders, this is a strong example of how cyber threats are evolving. Attackers are not just looking for a way into the network. They are building sophisticated infrastructure designed to help them operate quietly and avoid detection. That makes visibility across the IT environment increasingly important. Strong vulnerability management, identity and access controls, continuous monitoring, and a clear incident response strategy all need to work together. Business travel has always come with cybersecurity risks, but the latest campaign uncovered by Microsoft shows just how convincing today’s attacks have become. Instead of relying on suspicious emails or fake websites, attackers are compromising hotel Wi-Fi login pages and using them to deliver what appear to be legitimate browser or operating system updates. Once installed, the malware can quietly give attackers access to sensitive business information, including login credentials, corporate files, and cloud accounts. It is a reminder that cybercriminals are increasingly targeting moments when people are focused on getting connected rather than questioning whether the network itself can be trusted.

The bigger takeaway is that cybersecurity can no longer depend on users spotting every threat. Organizations need security strategies that assume trusted environments can still be compromised. That means combining Zero Trust principles with managed updates, strong endpoint protection, phishing-resistant MFA, and secure remote access policies. As attackers continue finding new ways to exploit everyday business activities, resilience comes from building multiple layers of protection rather than relying on a single security control. Staying secure is no longer just about defending the office. It is about protecting employees wherever work takes them.

Enabling multifactor authentication is a critical step. It is not the finish line.

This is one of the most common misconceptions we encounter in conversations with leadership teams. MFA gets enabled, the initiative gets closed, and identity security moves down the priority list. The assumption is that the control is in place and the risk is managed.

The reality is more nuanced.

MFA reduces the likelihood of credential-based attacks significantly. What it does not do is eliminate them. Prompt bombing exploits user fatigue to push through authentication requests. SIM swapping redirects verification codes to attacker-controlled devices. Adversary-in-the-middle techniques intercept sessions even after MFA has been successfully completed.

These are not theoretical risks. They are documented attack methods actively used against organizations that believe MFA alone is sufficient.

Mature identity security is built in layers. MFA is the foundation. Conditional access policies that evaluate the context and risk level of every login attempt. Device trust frameworks that restrict access to approved and compliant endpoints. Continuous behavioral monitoring that flags anomalous activity even when credentials appear valid.

If your organization has MFA enabled and considers identity security a resolved issue, that assumption is worth revisiting.
