New York just passed a bill that would ban AI chatbots from giving dental advice.

As someone building an AI workforce for dental practices, I have thoughts.

Senate Bill S7263 would hold chatbot operators liable whenever AI gives “substantive” responses in licensed fields including medicine, law, and yes, dentistry. Users can sue. Fee-shifting means even small cases are worth filing. 90 days to comply if it passes.

Here’s what people are getting wrong about this.

The bill is not anti-AI. It’s anti-impersonation. There’s a real difference between an AI that pretends to diagnose your tooth pain and an AI workforce that runs your practice.

One is replacing clinical judgment. The other is running the practice.

Every AI company building in a healthcare adjacent vertical is about to spend serious time and money figuring out where that line is. That’s real friction on top of already complex compliance requirements.

My take: regulated AI in healthcare is inevitable and honestly welcome. But vague legislation with private right of action creates a litigation lottery, not a safety net.

The practices that will get hurt most are solo dentists, rural clinics, understaffed offices. The same people who need an AI workforce the most because they can not hire and retain staff.

Founders building in this space need to be part of this conversation, not watching from the sidelines.

Talked to a practice owner this week. She's running a great practice. Been in business for 25 years.

I asked her what tools she's using.

She started listing them:
Dentrix for practice management.
Dental Intel for analytics.
