Dropbox went from 100,000 users to 4 million in 15 months.

A demo video pushed the waitlist from 5,000 to 75,000 overnight. Then a referral program that gave both people free storage lifted signups 60% for good. In April 2010 users sent 2.8 million invites.

The reward was the product itself, so every referral made people use Dropbox more.

Airbnb started in 2007 with three air mattresses on a San Francisco apartment floor.

In 2008 the founders kept it alive by selling Obama O’s and Cap’n McCain’s cereal, raising about $30,000. Then they flew to New York and photographed listings themselves.

Twelve years later Airbnb went public and closed its first day worth about $100 billion. In 2024 Paul Graham named the way Brian Chesky runs it: founder mode.

Sara Blakely started Spanx in 2000 with $5,000 in savings and no investors.

She sold fax machines door to door for seven years, cut the feet off her pantyhose, wrote much of her own patent and got into Neiman Marcus by showing the buyer the product in a restroom.

She owned 100% of Spanx for 21 years. When Blackstone bought a majority stake at a $1.2 billion valuation, she gave every employee $10,000 and two first class tickets.

Ali Abdaal started a YouTube channel at Cambridge medical school in 2017.

In 2020 he hit a million subscribers and the business passed $1 million in revenue. By 2022 it earned about $4.6 million from more than a dozen income streams.

In 2020, Google AdSense was the smallest of his five biggest lines. Skillshare classes, his own course, sponsorships and affiliate links all earned more.

One skill, sold as videos, a newsletter, a course, a book and now apps.

Four things worth taking:

1. Teach what you are doing right now.
2. Stack products on one skill.
3. Show your numbers.
4. Start part time.

Dude Perfect started as five Texas A&M roommates posting a basketball trick shot in 2009.

In April 2024 they took more than $100 million from Highmount Capital, their first outside money. Revenue had grown from $20 million in 2021 to an expected $50 million plus in 2024. Six months later they hired their first CEO, former NBA executive Andrew Yaffe.

The founders keep making the content. The money goes into a Frisco headquarters, tours, games and new talent.

Four things worth taking:

1. Pick one lane and own it.
2. Grow revenue before you raise.
3. Hire the operator.
4. Turn the format into places people can visit.

Codie Sanchez teaches people to buy laundromats, car washes and roofing companies.

Her businesses brought in more than $31 million from April 2025 to March 2026, per Inc. Contrarian Thinking started as a newsletter in 2019 and has never taken outside funding.

The free side is huge. Around 130 million views a month and over a million weekly newsletter readers. The paid side is stacked behind it: an academy for buyers, a boardroom for owners, the BizScout marketplace and a capital arm.

Four things worth taking:

1. Teach what you actually do.
2. Give the method away.
3. Build a tier for each stage of your customer.
4. Own the transaction.

Ten ways to open a short form video, and why each one holds attention.

Open on the result. Open on motion. Open on a question. Open on access.

The fastest test is on slide 8. Cut your first sentence. If the video still works, leave it cut.

Then re-edit your last post so the payoff lands in second one and post both.

Logan Paul and KSI launched Prime in 2022. By 2023 it was doing an estimated $1.2 billion in sales and outselling Gatorade in Walmart’s hydration aisle.

In 2024, Prime Hydration UK revenue fell about 70%. U.S. sales dropped about 40% in the first half of the year. The company called it a move from hyper-growth to a long-term presence.

The launch was a masterclass in attention. The second year is where repeat buying sets the real number.

Four things worth taking:

1. Treat the launch as a test of who comes back.
2. Size supply deals to year two.
3. Give the product its own reason to exist.
4. Keep the founders close to the product.

Hailey Bieber launched rhode in 2022. Three years later e.l.f. Beauty agreed to buy it for up to $1 billion.

The brand did $212 million in net sales in the year before the deal, almost all of it through its own website. J.P. Morgan called it the fastest billion dollar sale for a beauty company.

She stayed on as Chief Creative Officer and Head of Innovation. Nick Vlahos runs the company.

Four things worth taking:

1. Launch narrow.
2. Sell direct first.
3. Let the feed do the marketing.
4. Write your role into the deal.

Gary Vaynerchuk has run the same trade for twenty years.

Buy attention while it’s cheap. Over-deliver on it. Ask once.

1996: email marketing for a liquor store, while the industry ran on print circulars. Cheap Google keywords on w**e terms. $3M to $60M.

2006: W**e Library TV. A folding table, a spit bucket, a Jets jersey. A thousand daily episodes, comments answered by hand for years.
2009: VaynerMedia, self-funded out of a borrowed conference room. Clients arrived already convinced, because the web show had been the proof for three years.

Then the same audience carried into Resy, sold to Amex. Empathy W**es, sold to Constellation. VeeFriends into Crocs, Macy’s and Mattel’s UNO.

Four things to take:
Go where attention is underpriced. Keep the format cheap enough to run daily. Let the content be the credential. Carry the audience into the next thing.

Name the platform where attention is cheapest for you right now, then commit to a format you can run every day on it.
