Meta posted record first quarter revenue of 56.31 billion dollars and net income of 26.8 billion dollars . Three weeks later, the company is set to hand out roughly 8,000 pink slips on May 20, eliminating 10 percent of its workforce . Employees have built countdown websites tracking the date, one carrying the header "Big Beautiful Layoff" .

The mood inside the company is described as "grim" and "incredibly demoralizing" . One Instagram employee told Wired: "Everyone is unhappy; the only people who are not unhappy are, literally, executives" . Meta also deployed surveillance software on employee laptops that tracks keystrokes and mouse movements for AI training with no opt out . Some workers now openly hope to be laid off just to collect severance .

🚨 Grafana Labs Hacked And They Refused to Pay the Ransom

If you use Grafana for monitoring your Linux servers or homelab, here's something you need to know.

🔓 What happened?

An unauthorized attacker managed to steal a GitHub access token belonging to Grafana Labs. Using that token, they broke into Grafana's GitHub environment and downloaded the entire codebase, including proprietary code that isn't publicly available.

⚠️ The threat

After stealing the code, the attackers threatened to publicly release it unless Grafana paid a ransom. Classic extortion.

✅ Grafana's response? A big fat NO.

Grafana Labs publicly refused to pay, citing the FBI's own guidance that paying ransoms doesn't guarantee data safety and only encourages more attacks. They've since invalidated the compromised credentials and tightened security across their GitHub environment.

The good news for users:

• No customer data was stolen
• No personal information was accessed
• No impact on customer systems or operations

👏 Hats off to Grafana Labs for standing firm.

In an era where even large organizations cave to extortion (Canvas recently paid after data on 275 million students was stolen), Grafana's decision to hold the line is both principled and commendable.

This is the kind of backbone the open source community respects. Don't negotiate with hackers. Don't reward criminal behavior.

Audit your GitHub tokens, rotate credentials regularly, and always use the principle of least privilege for API access.
