Remember when backing up meant a stack of floppy disks next to the computer? The floppies are gone, but plenty of offices still have the same setup: one copy, sitting right next to the machine it's supposed to protect, that nobody has ever tested.
It's worth a few minutes this week to find out where you stand. Ask whoever handles your IT three questions:
- What gets backed up? Just some files, or the whole computer and server?
- Where does the backup live? If it's only on a drive plugged into the same machine, ransomware can reach it too.
- When did someone last restore something from it to prove it works?
For our managed clients we run image-based backups. They capture the entire machine: operating system, programs, settings, and files. If a PC or server dies, we restore the whole thing instead of rebuilding it from scratch. We can check your backups and test a restore so you know they'll work when you need them.
