It’s hard to believe it’s been four years since Inconvenient Daughter hit shelves. On this blisteringly hot Sunday, all I can feel is gratitude for everyone who supported ID - whether it’s by purchasing the book, writing a review, or letting someone know about this book. I’m grateful to all of you 💛.

And while I have no plans to revisit Rowan, I’ve been hanging out with Charlie, Avery, and In Seon…all of whom I hope you’ll have the pleasure to meet soon!

I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do this work, and honored that so many couples have trusted me to tell their stories, highlight their hopes and wishes for the future, and to affirm their commitments before family and friends.

If you or someone you know is tying the knot in PA, NJ, or NY, tell them to DM me so we can begin writing the next chapter of their love story, and follow Events by LJS!

Happy third pubversary to Inconvenient Daughter and Rowan Kelly. I’m pretty sure I used to say “birthday” when it came to celebrating this anniversary, but the more I think about it, the more I realize both Rowan and this story have lived in my soul longer than three years.

This book and its story have traveled the gambit of the adoption constellation, countries (from Australia to England), and readers’ hearts. Most days it’s still hard to believe it even happened.

Thank you to everyone who read this book, whose lives were touched by it. Thank you to the universe for using this book as a conduit to connect me to others with experiences like, and different from, mine. And lastly, thank you to Rowan, for living unapologetically.

This is the story of a table.

Forty-seven years ago, my parents had their first apartment in Forest Hills. They were young, they were in love…and they were broke. For the first few weeks my dad set the place up, and he slept on a sleeping bag on the floor because they had no furniture. In thag bedroom is where he built their first piece of furniture - a dining room table.

Unbeknownst to me, the table moved with them to every single place they lived after that apartment. My dad told me he never had the heart to throw it away, and had been lugging it around with us with every move.

Three years ago, my dad built another table for Bryan and I. We’d moved into a rental house and had a gorgeous dining room. The table was made from the wood of the kitchen we ate in, from the house I called home for so many years. But the table has proven too large for our Philly apartment, so Bryan and I were on the hunt for a new dining set.

This weekend, my parents rolled that first table my father made into our apartment, and we christened it with pasta, laughs, and love. All I can think of is how blessed I am to sit at a table that’s witnessed so many happy memories, and will be part of so many more.

As this year comes to a close, all I can think of is how fortunate I am. Fortunate to be alive, fortunate to have amazing family and friends, fortunate to be loved.

This year, I got to stand up before family and those closest to me, and marry my best friend...my Muffin. It was a day we will never forget, and we are so lucky to (hopefully) have more happy days ahead of us.

IDK who needs to hear this, but this holiday season, let's normalize not commenting on the bodies of others.

Comments about people's bodies - regardless of intent - can have deeply triggering and harmful effects on those on the receiving end.

While some comments are meant to be complimentary, remarks like these reinforce the idea that before weight loss, there was something wrong with my body. Comments like these perpetuate harmful stereotypes regarding which bodies are valuable, worthy, and beautiful.

You never know what a person is going through, and therefore never know how your words are going to affect them. While some people may love receiving complimentary comments on their bodies, each individual person has a different idea of what support looks like.

For me, support looks like wishing me a happy holiday, telling me you like my outfit (not its fit), and asking me about plans for the new year...not remarking on my body for better or for worse.
