Sad but True: AOL Dial-Up Has Officially Ended

As of September 30, 2025, AOL has officially shut down its long-running dial-up internet service.

This marks the end of an era that started back in the early 1990s, when AOL was one of the biggest names in getting people online. At its peak, AOL had more than 30 million subscribers dialing in, filling homes with the unforgettable screech of a 56k modem. From the famous “You’ve Got Mail” voice to chat rooms and instant messaging, AOL played a key role in shaping the early internet experience.

While broadband and wireless have long since taken over, AOL kept dial-up alive for those who still relied on it in rural areas. Now, that chapter has officially closed.

At ARPM906 & IronNorth Innovations, we honor the history of where internet service began, even as we work on the technologies of the future. AOL dial-up may be gone, but its legacy will always be remembered.
