Manhattan Beach, Hermosa, and El Segundo shop and office owners: a quick tip for the weekend ☕

If customers or visitors use your Wi-Fi, give them their own network.

A guest network keeps visitors online without letting them anywhere near your registers, printers, computers, or files. Most business routers can set one up in a few minutes.

While you're in there:
• Use a different password for guests than for staff
• Change the guest password every few months
• If the router's admin password is still the one printed on the sticker, change it

Harvest season in Kern County means extra hands at the hulling yards, packing houses, and farm offices from Shafter to Delano

It also tends to mean one shared login taped to the monitor. We get it: it's busy, and everyone needs to get to work.

A few simple habits so the season doesn't leave a mess behind:
• Give each seasonal worker their own login, even a basic one
• Only give access to what they need for the job
• Keep a list of who got access, and turn it off on their last day
• Change any shared passwords once the season wraps up

Ten minutes at the end of harvest can save a lot of headaches in spring.

Torrance, Redondo, Hawthorne, and Gardena business owners: if a caller says your power will be cut off in 30 minutes unless you pay right now, hang up.

Scammers pretending to be Southern California Edison call customers, threaten a disconnection, and push for payment over the phone. SCE says customers filed more than 1,700 fraud complaints last year and lost over $130,000.

Phone and text scams work better than most people think: in phishing tests reported in this year's Verizon breach report, phone and text attempts got 40% more engagement than email.

A few things to know:
• SCE says it won't disconnect service without proper notice
• Pressure to pay over the phone, right now, is the red flag
• Hang up and call SCE using the number on your bill or at sce.com, not a number the caller gives you
• Give whoever answers your phones a heads-up about this one

Kern County: fall brings dry, windy days, and sometimes planned power shutoffs.

When wildfire risk is high, utilities can turn off power for safety. It's called a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), and parts of Kern County have been through it before.

For a shop, office, or packing house, a few things to do before the wind picks up:
• Make sure important files back up to the cloud, not only to a box in the back room
• Put your server and network gear on a battery backup (UPS) so they shut down safely
• Sign up for outage alerts from your utility for your business address
• Decide how your team will reach customers if phones and Wi-Fi go down

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month 🔐 Here's the one tip we'd give every business from El Segundo to San Pedro:

Turn on MFA for your email.

MFA (multi-factor authentication) means that after your password, you confirm it's really you with a code or a tap on your phone. So even if someone steals your password, they still can't get in.

It takes a few minutes per person. Start with email, then banking, payroll, and anything that holds customer info.

Bakersfield business owners: a quick heads-up on fake city invoices.

The City of Bakersfield has warned about scam invoices that use a copy of the city logo, real-sounding staff names, and even details like your business name or permit info. They ask for a wire transfer and push you to keep everything "by email only."

A few quick checks:
• Real city emails end in .gov, .us, .us, or .us
• Call the department directly, using a number from the city's website, not the one in the email
• A sudden deadline or "your permit will be denied" is a reason to slow down, not speed up

Got one that looks off? Report it to IC3.gov or Bakersfield PD. And if you'd like a second set of eyes on a suspicious email, give us a call.
