We were honored to win 2nd place in the EPRI Quantum Sensors Challenge for Stabilizing Grid Frequency with Atomic Clocks! Thanks to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) for hosting the competition!

EPRI’s quantum challenges focus on how quantum technologies can address energy industry challenges. Each challenge is carefully selected to address key industry issues potentially solvable using quantum technologies. The primary goal of the challenges is to inspire and educate individuals, generate new enthusiasm and investment, and foster collaboration between the energy and quantum industries.

EPRI’s Quantum Interest Group is excited to announce the winners of the 2023 Quantum Challenge:
• First Place: National Renewable Energy Laboratory (https://ow.ly/zUmA50SXK3C) and Atom Computing (https://ow.ly/4igV50SXK3B) for “Q-GRID, a Quantum-Enhanced Global Real-time Intelligent Detection for Clock-Synchronized Wide-Area Monitoring”
• Second Place: Infleqtion (https://ow.ly/6pxt50SXK3x) for “Stabilizing Grid Frequency with Atomic Clocks”
• Third Place: Resilient Entanglement Inc. (https://ow.ly/rXnZ50SXK3z) for “Enhanced Resilience in Power Systems Through Quantum Sensor Network (QSN)”

The top three proposals each receive a monetary prize: the first-place winning team receives $10,000, the second-place team receives $7,500, and the third-place team receives $5,000.

EPRI’s Quantum Sensors Challenge focused on how the electric industry may use quantum sensors to obtain more accurate and detailed information related to grid and power plant assets, including all forms of power generation (nuclear, renewables, fossil, etc.) and grid assets (transmission, distribution, and substations).

Electric utilities increasingly depend on sensors, information technology, and telecommunication to ensure the proper operation and high reliability of today’s energy system. Quantum sensors may offer additional capabilities not currently available using sensors.

“This year’s winning proposals identified opportunities to accelerate the adoption of new quantum technologies in sensors technologies which have the potential to enhance utilities' capabilities and provide low-cost and reliable energy for the public,” said Jeremy Renshaw, Senior Technical Executive for AI, Quantum, and Innovation at EPRI.
