NANSENSE Motion Capture

NANSENSE Motion Capture The world most advanced and fun to use inertial motion capture systems. Motion Capture Magic.

NANSENSE combines 3D kinematics software, inertial and hybrid sensing technologies to animate digital characters for video games, films, virtual reality, biomechanics, medical and sport science industries.

We’ve been hard at work developing editing tools and we are getting close to releasing our editor and post-processor for cleaning motion capture data. In this example, we are cleaning a simple foot placement manually.

The tag (horizontal bars) system allows you to define and edit foot placements, jumps and other general properties of the animation. Once your tags are finalized, the post-processor will use the FK/IK solver to recalculate the body while avoiding IK pops, limb overextensions and other unwanted vibrations. The new editor has many other features including displacement editing (remove positional drift), jump editing, height tracking editing, filters and cropping. While editing, you can also push your data to the retargeted character to see what the result looks like.

After a year of hardcore software development and pandemic restrictions, we rolled out face and our integrated retargeter (AIK) for whole-body real-time motion capture (body, fingers and face). You can now truly animate a whole character in one click. All of these new features are free.

Additionally, our body and finger solvers now use an improved FK/IK system, which removes all IK pops and other unwanted artefacts.

This video briefly showcases the steps to retargeting a character in NANSENSE Studio.

To retarget, you have a source and a target. The source can be active or passive where active is a live suit (or an emulated file) and passive is a recorded file. The target is the character you import, which in this case is a standard Mixamo rig.

We automatically generate a mapping file, map the skeleton, force the source into bind pose and pose match the target to the source. When retarget is enabled, the characters move in tandem, share takes and recorders. From that moment onward you can make adjustments and post-process your data.

Here is an awesome example of our full-body and finger tracking technologies used in the context of sign language by our talented friends at Kara. Over the past year Kara has collaborated with the New Zealand government and deaf education centres to produce a library of children books in New Zealand Sign Language. Each book was translated by a team of experts, and motion captured using NANSENSE suit and gloves, obtaining the highest possible motion capture fidelity and detail.

The video, signed by Niki, is a small section of the book "Seven Kites of Matariki".

A quick look at one of the features we are excited about releasing in all-new v19.0.0 of NANSENSE Studio. The software will allow users to import, retarget and animate characters directly in our ecosystem without the need of any third-party tools. Other than producing game-ready assets, this feature is also compatible with our plugin pipelines for real-time digital puppetry. The retargeter features some automated features we are excited about including, a skeletal crawler that automatically generates mapping templates, automatic pose matching and is compatible with our face mocap pipelines.

The image shows how the motion gets translated from a source skeleton to the target using our proprietary FK/IK character system and brand new 3D engine.

The ability to process, visualize, record, modify and pipeline face data is a free feature that we will be rolling out in Studio version 19.0.0. Here are some tests (on a Mixamo character in real-time in Unity).

Need to hold a sword or a gun? Object tracking is easy with the NANSENSE’s prop sensors. Just attach the sensor to the object and you’re done.

Our systems can also integrate absolute positioning and orientation data from VR trackers for room-scale and other interactive projects.

Our new suit design is complete and shipping out to new customers. Although the all black redesign looks simpler, it features five additional zippers designed to simplify the process of dressing and washing the suit. The patterns are completely new.
