I’ve seen this student work (NYC Pasta by Alex Creamer) packaging design blogged about a lot. It’s even made it into a couple of design books. Is it a successful packaging design? Does it pay equal service to form and function? Has the designer considered use when creating this packaging? Shipping challenges? Merchandising concerns? Freshness and FDA issues?

Don’t get me wrong, Alex did a fantastic job on his assignment. It’s student work and this packaging is cool. Im not knocking him and would have been thrilled to have a 1/4 of the recognition he’s gotten for this piece on one of mine when I was in school.

But most of the design bloggers and books who have picked up and endorsed the design, however, seem to be doing so based solely on the fact that others are doing it, and rather than raise questions about the function of a design they are content to simply post it also and hope for lots of clicks.

This, to me, is a phenomenon in the Information Age that the design world needs to address. How do we continue to provide meaningful work in the face of technology that enables “good enough” to go viral?
