my life is a dot lost among thousands of other dots. every time i have had a problem, i have confronted it with the ax of art. i fight pain, anxiety, and
fear every day, and the only method i have found that relieves my illness is
to keep creating art. i followed the thread of
art and somehow discovered a path that would allow me to live.
i used it as an art therapy to cope with my obsessions. become one with eternity. become part of your environment. take off your clothes. forget yourself.
make love.

one of very favorite artists. who shared not only her art so vulnerably but her mental health journey as well. tt’s never easy to share either but you can not comprehend how much less alone it might make a person feel by hearing another person’s story. she also inspired me to play more and not uphold boring, basic standards of art + beauty. she even brought new friendship into my life and inspired many homages through the years. thank you, yayoi, what an icon 🔴🔴🔴

The Begums, an homage to the trailblazing women of yesteryear, whose resilience, audacity and sass ignited the spirits of the fearless BADtameez betis (daughters) of today.

The Begums made their debut at the kitty_party__ in 2024 (painted between 2023 and 2024(. I recently pulled them out of retirement to loan them for an exhibition here in Los Angeles and was reminded of how it felt to create this collection. This was the first time in my painting journey that I felt like maybe I might have found my voice. I think style evolves, grows, can take many directions, but your voice is a constant that you really keep sharpening throughout your art practice. But it was not lost on me that happened while creating these paintings/ love letters to the women who held me while I was searching for that.

what does that mean? channel your inner baddie and refuse to shrink yourself, always question inherited rules, use your radical imagination to create more colorful futures (a call for collective liberation), and of course, finding the fun helps everything move better. 🌙

a jacket fit for a BADtameez beti. okay y’all know two of things i ride hard for are sisterhood and a beti that isn’t afraid to be a little badtameez. 🌶️ 

so the synchronicity of shephalie asking me to paint a custom denim jacket she could gift her sister to celebrate finishing her screenplay called KITTY PARTY was everything. we wanted to celebrate the idea but also get a little cheeky because y’all spilling the chai is prime sisterhood. 🫖 if you know, you know. “when i say i won’t tell anyone, my sister doesn’t count.” i also threw in a little homage to our queen rekha and a little disco love because you can’t kitty party without them. 🪩

i love wearable art, because you become part of the piece. this was definitely one of my favorite commissions this year. thank you shephalie and shilpika and thank you, to one of my ride or dies, Sheela K. for connecting us. 🪐
