10% of residents in Hawaii have diabetes, and it is most prevalent among minority populations. MAʻO Organic Farms is a non-profit social enterprise with a mission to grow fresh organic vegetables and young leaders for the community. Interns on the farm increase their consumption of leafy green vegetables and bring fruits and vegetables to their families, which in turn decreases their lifetime chance of contracting type 2 diabetes.

“Hawaii has the potential to be the example for the world of what it means to live sustainably and feed our people well.” - Erika Kuhr, The Hawai'i Institute of Pacific Agriculture - HIP Agriculture

HIP Agriculture is a local farm supporting garden-to-cafeteria and Hawaii’s first farm to school program. It supports children in getting healthy, and supports local farmers to produce food for schools, which is the largest potential market of fresh local produce in the state. Children also get to learn in the garden, which reconnects them to the land and where their food comes from.

Community Compost Movement reduces their community's carbon footprint by providing a food-waste pick-up service. Composted food scraps help local farms build healthy soil, and divert waste from landfills.

Inspired by “To Be Of Use” by Marge Piercy written in 1973, this poem is still relevant today as it spoke to the resilience of people, doing the work that needs to be done, again and again.

This film pays homage to our heroes - our farm workers, sanitation workers, doctors & nurses, and psychotherapists - especially during the time of COVID. It also pays tribute to the women and men fighting for equality, for a world free from discrimination and persecution. And to our ancestors — who have been fighting the fight long before us.

What we plant matters! 🥜🌰🌳

In agriculture, Annual cropping systems are a major contributor of CO2 emissions. Annual crops (e.g. maize, wheat, potatoes, soybeans) have a life cycle that lasts only one year, and need to be replanted each spring. Perennials (e.g. many legumes, nut & fruit trees) come back for many seasons and have higher rates of carbon sequestration.

Today, 89% of the world’s cropland is used to produce Annual staple crops. But in the tropics, many Perennial staple crops (bananas, breadfruit) are already widely grown, and yield as well or better than their Annual staple crop competitors. Tropical staple tree crops also require lower inputs of fuel, fertilizer, and pesticides, if any at all.

✨Fun fact: Breadfruit (green fruit in the last slide) is a highly nutritious, starchy staple crop common in tropical regions, and has great potential to address hunger and opportunities for climate change mitigation.

Do you know what type of lighting is used at your home, school, or office?

LEDs are the most energy-efficient bulbs available. Any bulb can be replaced by LEDs, but the upfront cost is an obstacle for global household adoption. The price for LEDs is 2-3 times higher than incandescents or fluorescents, but LEDs use 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting.
