Can You Sell a Car Without Rego in NSW or Sydney?
Yes, But Read This First
Got a car sitting in the driveway with expired rego? You're not stuck with it. A lot of people think no rego means no sale. That's not how it works in NSW.
You can sell it. Legally. Today if you want.
But there are a few things you need to do right or it comes back to bite you weeks later.
Here's what actually matters:
The sale itself is fine. What's NOT fine is the buyer hopping in and driving it home. An unregistered car cannot go on a public road without an Unregistered Vehicle Permit from Transport for NSW. Most buyers sort out a tow or car removal just make sure that's clear before the handover so nobody gets a nasty surprise on pickup day.
The document most sellers forget:
Lodge a Notice of Disposal with Service NSW within 14 days of the sale. You can do it online in about 5 minutes through your MyServiceNSW account. This is the step that removes your name from the vehicle. Skip it and any fines the new owner picks up after the sale can still land back on you. Don't skip it.
What you actually need to sell:
— Proof the car is yours. Old rego papers or a purchase receipt works
— A simple bill of sale. Both names, the car details, VIN, price and date
— That Notice of Disposal lodged after
That's it. No pink slip needed if the car is already unregistered.
One more thing also don't leave it parked on a public street. Councils in NSW can tow unregistered vehicles and fine you for it. If it's sitting out front expired, move it to your driveway or sort the sale quickly.
What about selling an EV without rego?
Same rules apply. An electric vehicle is treated exactly the same as any other car under NSW road transport law. If it's unregistered it cannot be driven on public roads but it can absolutely be sold privately. Given how fast second hand EV prices are dropping right now, there are actually quite a few unregistered EVs moving through the private market. Buyers are picking them up, getting them inspected and re-registered themselves. The process is identical to any other car.
One thing worth knowing when the new owner re-registers an EV in NSW, there's no stamp duty exemption anymore. That ended December 2023. So factor that into your pricing conversation with the buyer.
