Can You Sell a Car Without Rego in NSW or Sydney?

Yes, But Read This First

Got a car sitting in the driveway with expired rego? You're not stuck with it. A lot of people think no rego means no sale. That's not how it works in NSW.

You can sell it. Legally. Today if you want.

But there are a few things you need to do right or it comes back to bite you weeks later.
Here's what actually matters:

The sale itself is fine. What's NOT fine is the buyer hopping in and driving it home. An unregistered car cannot go on a public road without an Unregistered Vehicle Permit from Transport for NSW. Most buyers sort out a tow or car removal just make sure that's clear before the handover so nobody gets a nasty surprise on pickup day.

The document most sellers forget:

Lodge a Notice of Disposal with Service NSW within 14 days of the sale. You can do it online in about 5 minutes through your MyServiceNSW account. This is the step that removes your name from the vehicle. Skip it and any fines the new owner picks up after the sale can still land back on you. Don't skip it.

What you actually need to sell:

— Proof the car is yours. Old rego papers or a purchase receipt works
— A simple bill of sale. Both names, the car details, VIN, price and date
— That Notice of Disposal lodged after

That's it. No pink slip needed if the car is already unregistered.
One more thing also don't leave it parked on a public street. Councils in NSW can tow unregistered vehicles and fine you for it. If it's sitting out front expired, move it to your driveway or sort the sale quickly.

What about selling an EV without rego?

Same rules apply. An electric vehicle is treated exactly the same as any other car under NSW road transport law. If it's unregistered it cannot be driven on public roads but it can absolutely be sold privately. Given how fast second hand EV prices are dropping right now, there are actually quite a few unregistered EVs moving through the private market. Buyers are picking them up, getting them inspected and re-registered themselves. The process is identical to any other car.

One thing worth knowing when the new owner re-registers an EV in NSW, there's no stamp duty exemption anymore. That ended December 2023. So factor that into your pricing conversation with the buyer.

Sold a Car Without RWC — Buyer Now Wants to Return It. What Happens Next?

Saw this exact situation come up this week and honestly it's more common than people realise.

Someone sells their car privately. No RWC. Buyer agrees, signs a letter, pays the money, drives off. Next day the car fails inspection and suddenly the buyer is back at the door wanting a refund.
So what actually happens here?

If the buyer signed an "as is" agreement before handing over the cash that agreement matters. A lot. It shows the buyer knew exactly what they were getting into before the money changed hands. That's your protection as a seller.

But here's the thing people miss.

That letter only covers what was known at the time of sale. If the buyer can show a problem was there before they bought it and you knew about it that changes things. So be upfront about any issues you're aware of. Write them down too if you can. The more transparent the sale, the harder it is for anyone to come back at you later.

A few things every private seller should do before handing over the keys without an RWC:

— Get a signed written agreement stating the car is sold as is, no RWC, buyer is responsible for obtaining one
— Cancel the registration and return your plates to the transport authority in your state. If the car is still in your name and the buyer drives it any fines, tolls or accidents can still come back to you
— Keep copies of everything. The letter, the receipt, any messages. Screenshots count

State rules are different too. In Victoria selling a registered car without an RWC is technically not allowed unless you've already removed the plates and suspended the rego. In Queensland a Safety Certificate is required for registered private sales but not always for unregistered vehicles.

The lesson here is simple. A one-page signed letter before the handover protects both sides and saves a lot of drama later. Most people skip it and that's where the arguments start.

👇 Have you ever bought or sold a car privately without an RWC? How did it go smooth or messy?

EOFY Car Deals Are HERE — And the Savings Are Actually Wild

If you've been sitting on the fence about buying a new car, this is genuinely the best time to move.

Multiple brands just dropped their prices ahead of 30 June — and some of these cuts are seriously worth talking about.
Here's the quick breakdown:
🔵 BYD — $3,000 cashback on the Shark 6 PHEV ute, Sealion 5, Sealion 6 and Sealion 8. The Sealion 5 now starts from just $30,990 before on-roads. That's hard to ignore.
🟠 Chery — $5,000 off the Tiggo 7 PHEV, now from $34,990 driveaway. The Tiggo 4 and Tiggo 8 also get a $2,000 factory bonus.
🔴 Ford — The Ranger PHEV has dropped nearly $10,000, now starting from $62,000 driveaway. Ford had to do something — BYD's Shark 6 was making the old price look silly.
🟢 Kia — The EV5 is now $49,990 driveaway. It was sitting close to $57K before on-roads. That's a big swing.
The fuel prices aren't going down anytime soon. Running costs on a PHEV or EV right now genuinely makes more sense than it ever has before.

👇 Drop your answer below — which brand is winning EOFY 2026 in your eyes?

And if you're seriously car shopping right now, save this post. You've got until 30 June.

AI Traffic Cameras Are Now Fining Aussie Drivers Automatically — Here Is What You Need to Know

Heads up Aussies. This is not a scare post. This is genuinely useful info that could save you hundreds of dollars.

AI traffic cameras are now fully active across Australia and they are not just watching for speeding anymore.

In the ACT they are now ticketing for mobile phone use AND seatbelt breaches at the same time. The fines are automatic and land in your letterbox without a cop ever pulling you over.
Here is what the fines look like right now:
📱 Phone use while driving: $548 to $674 plus 3 to 4 demerit points
🪑 Seatbelt not properly worn: $574 plus 3 demerit points

🚨 Queensland? Phone or unrestrained passenger costs you $1,251 and 4 points
And here is the part most people do not know.
As the driver, YOU get fined if your passenger is not wearing their seatbelt properly. That includes kids in the back seat shifting their sash off their shoulder. One mum in Canberra copped a $574 fine because her passenger slipped the shoulder strap aside for a moment. The camera caught it. The fine went to the driver.
In Western Australia, over 31,000 drivers were fined in just ONE month once enforcement kicked in.

Quick checklist before you drive anywhere:
✅ Phone in a proper mount, not in your lap or hand
✅ Everyone buckled, sash over the shoulder not tucked under the arm
✅ Check your window tint if you have had aftermarket work done
✅ Registration up to date
✅ No illegal mods that could flag a highway patrol stop
The cameras are smart, they are everywhere, and they are only expanding. A quick two minute check before you leave beats a $600 fine in the mail.

Share this with someone who needs to see it.

👇 Have you or anyone you know been caught by one of these cameras? Drop it in the comments.

BYD is coming for Toyota — and it is happening fast.

In March 2026, BYD outsold Ford, Mazda and Hyundai in a single month here in Australia. Only Toyota finished ahead.

7 new models launching this year. EVs now making up nearly 1 in 7 new car sales. Fuel prices pushing more Aussies toward electric and hybrid than ever before.

The Australian car market is changing fast. Are you keeping up?

🔋 Can you actually scrap an electric car in Australia?

Honest answer, most wreckers have no idea what to do with them.
Used EV sales in Australia more than doubled in just one month earlier this year. We went from around 3,000 sales in February to over 7,500 in March 2026. That is a massive shift happening really fast.

But here is the problem nobody is talking about.
The cash for cars and car removal industry is not ready for it.
Early EVs like your 2015 to 2019 Nissan Leafs, first gen Teslas and older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVs are starting to age. Some are getting written off. Repair costs on electric vehicles are high and insurers are writing them off more often than you would think.
So where do they go?
Right now, most end up sitting. Wreckers are turning them away because they do not have the equipment or the trained staff to safely handle a high voltage battery pack. Some are just guessing at pricing and hoping for the best.
Here is what a lot of people do not realise though. The battery in an EV can be worth more than the rest of the car combined. Lithium, cobalt, nickel. Battery refurbishers and second life energy storage companies are actively chasing supply and struggling to find it.
There is real money sitting in those old EVs. The businesses that figure this out first will be well ahead of the pack.

If you have got an old EV sitting around and you are not sure what to do with it, or you are in the industry and want to talk through what is coming, drop a comment below or send us a message.

This space is moving fast. 🚗⚡
