I haven’t abandoned my 100 Character Challenge! We’re at 37 💪🏾

After character 18, I took on 19 very special characters: my youngest son’s class. 💛 His teachers let me draw from observation, and I turned the experience into an end-of-year gift.

I learned SO much when I finished these back in June, and while I haven’t shared another character since, I haven’t stopped drawing. I’ve been putting everything I learned to work on my next picture book. 💕

To the families who came out for storytime this morning, I am SO sorry I missed you! 💛

We made the call to cancel because of the weather forecast, and I learned afterward that so many of you still came out for storytime. I feel terrible that I didn’t get to see you, but it means so much that you showed up to read with me!

The good news is we already have a new date! 📚✨

Every time I think back on this moment I laugh. I just knew my 100 year old great grandmother with all her memories and countless grandchildren could not be talking about little old me.

Most of my illustrations take over 10 hours and an embarrassing amount of overthinking.

These took 2, maybe 3.

I’m drawing 100 characters to loosen up my style and make room for a little more whimsy 🥰 in my next book.

Part 2 is for the history nerds 😭 We ended up in Watts after eating seafood in somebody’s backyard… so obviously we had to visit .

It’s kind of surreal because there are regular ranch homes all around it. Just sitting right in the middle of the neighborhood like it’s no big deal. Such a beautiful place to visit.

Anyways… last month I started a 100 character challenge to help me loosen up and learn a faster illustration style for my next book. These are numbers 14 and 15.

We’ll see how many I can get done next week because the references take forever to find. I’m looking for poses, expressions, outfits, backgrounds…

So if you’ve got a photo you’d let me use as reference, DM me please so I can spend less time scrolling the internet lol
