Designing a Map: Part 1

This map is not to scale. Did you notice? 🤫

If kept to scale, the font size for the map numbers would have been around 5pt—a size typically reserved for fine print. Because the goal is to highlight information, the text should be at 8pt or above.

Adjusting the map also creates space for clear icons. Now, instead of constantly checking back and forth between a key and the map, guests can immediately spot the stage, restrooms, and ticket booths.

Why the Kodansha Akira collection earned its own section on our bookshelf. 📕📗📘📙📕📗

1️⃣ The cover
The full-color dust jacket is beautiful, but underneath is an incredible duo-tone cover that’s just as thoughtfully designed. It’s one of those details you don’t expect.

2️⃣ Opening pages
Each volume begins with 10 glossy, full-color pages featuring hand-painted artwork. The contrast between these pages and the black-and-white interior highlightshow much range there is in Otomo’s artwork.

3️⃣ Japanese format
Akira was originally serialized in Young Magazine from 1982–1990 across 120 issues. The Kodansha collection is one of the few editions that preserves manga in its original black-and-white, right-to-left format. Readers get a chance to experience Otomo’s artwork as it first appeared and appreciate the incredible line work and visual storytelling that made the series legendary.

4️⃣ The storytelling
Even though this collection is in Japanese, the artwork is so thoughtfully crafted that the language barrier almost disappears. The pacing, composition, and visual details guide each page and show the power of visual communication.

5️⃣ Craftsmanship
From the printing quality to the cover design, every detail feels intentional. These books are more than comics—they’re a reminder that the way a book is made can be just as inspiring as what’s inside.

Will you be catching the 4K re-release this September? 👀

I usually leave the period unbolded, but I’ve done it both ways over the years. No one’s ever called me out either way. Probably because it’s just a period and no one is overthinking this hat as much as I am. 🤔💭💭

And what about the rest of the punctuations?

Do you treat commas, question marks, exclamation points, and everything else the same, or does it depend on the situation?

Some days it’s client calls and deadlines. Other days it’s solving a design problem. But everyday includes at least 5 seconds of being ridiculous. 🤪

It was hard to choose one artist to subscribe to when there are hundreds whose work I admire. 😩

But I kept coming back to .

I love her work and her process to illustration drew me in. It’s a looser approach than mine and inspired me to finally try techniques I’d been putting off for years.
As a bonus, I get to support an artist while learning, which makes the experience more meaningful.
