This construction company had backups, but those backups were still connected to the same network ransomware had already entered.

The attackers could have encrypted those copies too. Thankfully, they missed them and the critical data was recoverable.

A backup is only useful if it survives the incident that takes everything else down. At least one protected copy should be isolated from the main network, and recovery should be tested regularly.
