Honest answer from an audiophile-owned shop: it depends on the cable type.

HDMI, optical, coaxial — these carry digital signals. Either the data gets there or it doesn't. A $10 HDMI cable that meets the spec performs identically to a $150 one. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Analog interconnects and speaker cables — this is where it gets more nuanced. Signal quality, conductor material, shielding, and build quality can have a real impact, especially in a resolving system. You don't need to spend a fortune, but going too cheap here can introduce noise and affect the sound you worked hard to achieve.

The rule we go by: spend your money on the components first. Then use quality cables that are appropriate for the job — not boutique marketing, not bargain-bin either.

Your TV has an HDMI ARC port. Your receiver has an eARC port. Are they the same thing? Not exactly.

ARC (Audio Return Channel) sends audio from your TV back to your receiver or soundbar over a single HDMI cable — no separate optical cable needed. It works, but it's limited to compressed audio like Dolby Digital 5.1.

eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) is the upgrade. Same idea, but with dramatically more bandwidth — enough to pass lossless audio formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS:X. If you want true Atmos from your TV's apps, eARC is what makes it possible.

The bottom line: if your TV and receiver both have eARC, use it and use the right cable. If only one does, you'll default to standard ARC — and leave quality on the table.

Most people never think about what's inside their walls — until something goes wrong.

If you're running cable in-wall for speakers, a TV, or any part of your AV system, the rating on that cable matters. CL2 and CL3 are both approved for in-wall use — the difference is voltage rating. CL2 handles standard residential installs and covers most home theater wiring. CL3 carries a higher voltage rating with an added safety margin, making it the go-to for larger systems.

Here's what they don't affect: sound or picture quality. These are safety ratings, not performance ratings. The right choice comes down to your specific installation and what your local building code requires.

RCA or XLR — does it actually matter?

Short answer: it depends on your system. RCA is unbalanced; simple, common, and perfectly fine for most home audio setups and short cable runs. XLR is balanced; it rejects noise and interference, which makes a real difference in longer runs or more demanding signal chains.

If your preamp or DAC has both outputs, and your amp has both inputs, XLR is almost always the better choice. If your gear only has RCA, don't stress - just keep the runs short and the cables quality.
