Windows 10 is now periodically giving you warnings about being unsupported and insecure. Technically there is a risk, but I think it is very minimal for average users who take a few simple precautions and pay attention to what they are doing.
An alternative to virtually eliminate all risk of malware is to switch to a Linux-based operating system such as Linux Mint. I've done it for many customers. Some are still happily and safely using their (former Windows) computers from the Vista era (2008).

I cringe every time I go to the transfer station and look in the electronics bin. I see computers that I am sure I can easily fix and clean up, or at least salvage some good components, and use for various purposes such as controllers for digital emergency communications. If you are disposing of a Windows 10 (or 7 or 8) computer because it is "obsolete" for your use, please get in touch with me first rather than just throwing it away. I can generally recycle it to a higher purpose than salvaging a few cents worth of metal. I have been in the IT business for 30 years and have hundreds of customers who trust me with their computers so you don't have to worry about anything that might be on the hard drive.
