So, what’s the difference between AFCI and GFCI outlets? And which one should you have in your home? Here’s a quick guide…

AFCI and GFCI are different outlets designed to make your home safer. And they are both important to have in your home. Why? They do different, equally important jobs.

The GFCI outlets prevent electrical shock by cutting power to an outlet when the electrical current threatens to go where it’s not supposed to. Like through water or a person. It’s why you see GFCIs in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and in outdoor outlets.

AFCI outlets prevent electrical fires by detecting and stopping arc faults, cutting power to appliances or lighting before things like old, frayed power cords arc and ignite your home.

Together, AFCI and GFCI outlets create a more robust, safer electrical system. And they give you an early warning that something isn’t right and needs attention. Because if either of these types of outlets cuts power to an outlet, it’s time to take a look at your electrical to make sure your home is safe.

Some of the biggest mistakes we see in DIY electrical projects come down to bad installation. Often it’s loose wiring connections, ignored ground wires, or just using the wrong gauge wire for the job. All of which mean, at the very least, things aren’t going to work the way they’re supposed to. Or worse, it creates a dangerous situation that could lead to a bad shock or a fire.

In all three cases, we naturally recommend having a licensed electrician handle installing new wiring, or electrical appliances, so that you can enjoy the peace of mind of knowing it was done safely the right way.

Before adding appliances or electrical devices to an outlet in your home, do a little math to make sure you’re not overloading a single circuit. Devices that draw a lot of power, like window AC units or space heaters, typically tell you in the installation instructions how much power they use. And while plugging one of those things into a circuit might work, plugging in more than one on the same circuit, could cause problems.

Look for how many watts each device uses and add them together. If the devices together add up to over 1,500 watts, and one circuit can only handle 1,440 watts, you should avoid plugging them in on the same circuit.

It’s tempting to believe the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” adage is true for everything. But when it comes to outdated wiring and electrical panels, ignoring it can lead to major problems. Overloading older panels and wiring can cause serious damage. So if lights flicker, circuit breakers trip frequently or switches stop working, get a licensed electrician to check it out ASAP. A service call and updating your electrical is much better than the alternative.

Summer temps have been climbing. So it’s important to keep an eye out for signs that your home’s electrical system is struggling. Not surprisingly, your AC, outdoor accessories and those intense summer thunderstorms are key culprits in causing electrical issues. Here are some things to watch for:

▶️ What happens when the AC compressor comes on? If the lights flicker or a circuit breaker gets tripped, you may be pulling too much power through one circuit. Even window units use a lot of energy. So it’s best to have a dedicated circuit. And if your AC is constantly cycling on and off every few minutes, it might be time to have the HVAC serviced.
▶️ Doing a lot of outdoor entertaining? Pool pumps and outdoor electronics draw a lot of power, too. Make sure pool pumps have their own circuit and are maintained properly. Also, inspect any outdoor cords frequently for frays and tears. If it looks worn, replace it ASAP. And always use heavy-duty outdoor extension cords.
▶️ Stay ahead of the storm. Power surges from thunderstorms can wreak havoc on your electronics and appliances. Since storms can pop up any time around here in the summer, consider getting a whole-home surge protector installed. This puts protection right at the electrical panel so everything gets protected.

When folks talk about whole-home surge protection, it’s important to realize what it really is and how it’s different than a surge protector you plug into an outlet.

A whole-home surge protector is installed next to your electrical panel. From there, it keeps surges from reaching any electrical appliance in your home. What’s great is whole-home surge protectors give you peace of mind without needing surge protectors plugged in all over the house. They typically last three to five years and must be installed by a licensed electrician. That also means they cost a bit more.

But why would you need one? Summer storms and winter outages (which we tend to get around here) can lead to damaging power surges, for sure. There are also smaller surges that happen a lot more frequently that can add up and shorten the lifespan of appliances around the house.

And as homes add more smart devices and other electrical devices, that only means the need for surge protection is only going to increase. Lastly, all surge protectors have to be replaced every few years.

So does whole-home surge protection make sense for you? It depends, but for most homeowners, it ends up being the right call in the long run.
