Our quick tip a couple of months ago about surge protectors led to a question about whether they’re the same thing as power strips. Let’s be clear: They are NOT the same.

A simple power strip just allows you to plug more things into an outlet. But a voltage spike can easily overwhelm a power strip and damage whatever is plugged into it. A surge protector has protective circuitry and components built into it that prevent spikes in power from reaching your devices. They take the damage so your stuff doesn’t have to. Which is why you have to replace them every so often.

That’s also why it’s recommended to only use power strips for lamps, fans, phone chargers or other low-risk appliances. Computers, gaming consoles, televisions, modems, and other high-tech equipment? Go with a surge protector.

As the temperatures rise, so do commercial electrical issues. It makes sense, right? Higher temps mean increasing cooling demands on heavy equipment, as well as increased workloads. So the harder the push, the greater the chance for a problem. Here are a couple of measures to consider:
1️⃣ Do the maintenance. Routine servicing keeps equipment and machinery working the way it should, including making sure it has a consistent power supply. Same goes for your HVAC and electrical systems.
2️⃣ Ventilation and airflow. Inside airflow has a lot to do with how all kinds of equipment handles heat, from commercial refrigerators to IT servers. Give them the proper space for their own cooling systems to do their job.
3️⃣ Have a backup power supply. Increased power demands in the summer can cause dips in available power during peak times. Having backup generators ready can help you keep key equipment running.
4️⃣Test and measure. Look for heat spikes in your equipment and let them cool down. It may slow your operations temporarily. But that’s much better than frying circuit boards or hard drives, which can stop your business in its tracks. For HVAC, look for rapid cycling (turning on and off quickly) and warmer air blowing. If your circuit breakers keep tripping, that’s also an indication that the heat may be affecting your electrical panel.

A year ago today, a tragic automobile accident also resulted in a fire that destroyed our building here in Kernersville. We are grateful for all the first responders who kept the fire from spreading to surrounding properties and for the support of our community over the last year.

We are especially thankful for our Caudill's team members who stepped up immediately after the fire and who have worked hard to help us stay productive and take care of customers over the last year.

A silver lining to the tragedy is the opportunity to build a new Caudill’s facility that will allow us to serve our customers more efficiently. Look for construction to begin at the same location this summer!

Thank you, all!

Ben joined the Caudill’s team four years ago after spending a few years remodeling and flipping houses.

As an Electrical Supervisor, he loves the variety of projects at Caudill’s with something new and exciting for him to work on every day, from service calls to panel changes and residential upgrades all the way to big commercial equipment installations and rough-ins.

Treating employees and customers more like family is what sets Caudill’s apart for Ben. “Growing up my dad owned and still owns a small business in town,” he explains. “Watching him interact with customers and Caudill's interact with customers in a familiar and kind way has shown me the value of treating our customers like family.”

That trusty old surge protector under your desk might not be so trustworthy. It’s recommended that you replace surge protectors every few years. With the number of storms we get around here, every two to three years is a good idea. The guts of surge protectors degrade over time, especially if you’ve experienced power outages and surges. Better safe than have the next power surge fry your stuff.

If your light dims for a second or two when an appliance turns on, chances are it’s not a concern. But if it dims for longer or flickers frequently, you might want to get us to check it out.

Appliances like washing machines and AC units can draw a lot of electricity when they first turn on. This can cause a temporary voltage drop, making a light on the same circuit to briefly dim. If the light stays dim for more than a few seconds, or flickers a lot, it could mean an overloaded circuit or wiring issue that needs attention. Plus, dealing with it early can help keep it from becoming a bigger electrical problem later.
