About PJ’s Design
Established in 2002 as a Micro Business, hoping for a side income since I was employed full-time. The main services I offered included Business brochures, cards and related printed materials which I designed on the computer and sent to a commercial printer for completion. I also added the service of transferring VHS media to DVD (ie. Family videos.) I have created Publication layouts, such as Class Reunion materials, SubVet Anniversary Programs, and Newsletters such as “The Friends of the Voluntown Library” for which I consult on the layout and advertising and receive a free ad (no payment.) In no way was this ever a full-time business, nor was the Personal Property in question exclusively intended for business use only.
At the time I received my first Business Personal Property form, I consulted with the Assessor, who after discussing the nature of my business advised me to complete the form exactly the way I completed the most recent form (attached,) thus I was in a state of shock when I received the notice of increased assessment from $40 to $1610!
These days my office equipment consists of a Desk (gift 2002), chair (also a gift 2002) printer stand, computer purchased in 2006, printer purchased in 2010, (Receipts are attached.) Any supplies on hand would be left-overs from past projects (ie disks, paper.) Again, I must stress that when this equipment is used it is most likely not for business purposes. Perhaps I have even overstated the assessment amount on the Personal Property Declaration?
I have also attached a spread sheet which indicates the earnings enjoyed by PJ’s Design. 2016 $53.00, 2015 $0.00, etc. If any other documentation is required for the hearing, please let me know and I will gladly provide.
Respectfully,
Paula M. Jordan
