Today was a heartbreaking day in Chautauqua County
An elderly couple lost approximately $45,000 to a scam.
It started with an email claiming they had made a $700 purchase on Amazon. Concerned about the charge, they called the phone number listed in the email to cancel the order.
The person who answered claimed to be from Amazon and convinced them to allow remote access to their computer.
Once connected, the scammer gained their trust and instructed them to log into their online banking account. By the time they realized something was wrong, tens of thousands of dollars had been transferred out of their account.
After the scam was discovered, I was called in to help secure their computer and accounts. We changed passwords, reviewed affected systems, and ultimately reinstalled Windows to ensure the computer was clean.
Unfortunately, situations like this are becoming more common, and scammers are getting better at convincing people they are legitimate.
Please remember:
• Amazon will not ask to remotely access your computer to cancel an order.
• Never call phone numbers listed in suspicious emails.
• Never allow remote access to your computer unless you are certain who you are working with.
• If something feels off, stop and ask a trusted friend, family member, or IT professional before proceeding.
At SignalHaven Compliance, we help people recover from situations like this, but more importantly, we work to educate and protect people before they become victims.
Please share this with friends and family, especially older adults who may not be aware of these scams.
