I went to the Jacksonville Zoo the other day. It has been about 5 years since I stopped in. They still have signs at the Zoo I helped create. This was one of them... it's been a while... over 10 years now, and it still looks pretty darn good. They have being doing a lot of upgrades there and really making the guests experience better. Good job J.Z! 👍

Hope you enjoy my reminiscing posting series...

Working at cool company like Sally Corp meant an end of the month party, or holiday office party. Back then it was after hours, staff only, and included some alcohol. This created some great bonding experiences with my coworkers and even my bosses, like John Wood, smiling in the background while we goofed for the camera. I think the end of the month parties slowed down for various reasons, but I think they still have those holiday office parties. These days I would love to work at a company with this atmosphere once more, but my path unmistakably is an a different direction. Good Times and Good Memories.

So at some point I might have started going a little crazy. Why do you ask? Well it was because when I showed up for work, the sun was just coming up, and because we were busy and they days were short for winter (good ol' daylight savings time), it was dark when I was leaving for home. 6 days a week for about 6 weeks. All our painting was in the dark under black light paints. At one point I was painting yellow frames that went around characters like the one in this post. I really think that bright color starting messing with me somehow. I felt a little crazy. That's the price you pay to be in the creative professional art trenches. I earned my stripes on this run, and luckily no one got hurt. lol.

This was a character from Jocco's Jazzland for Six Flags. The nice lady on the left whos name escapes me was a animation artist for Disney. Modern technology animation eventually out paced cell animation and she was out of work. Felt bad for her but she understood and had a good disposition about her circumstance. Hiding in the back is the artist known as Jasmin Pehlivanovic. Both were very interesting people and Jasmin and I worked together for years. Thanks for showing me how the Bosnians drink coffee Jasmin. Jasmin created his own studio in the studio using racks, we referred to it as Fort Jasmin. lol. Note on Jazzland, it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina very shortly after it was created. It was an amazing design by Drew Hunter and the characters were a lot of fun to paint.

This was a project that turned out well and I really enjoyed painting it. One day it was a ball of foam and the next day it was this. The talented Tom Goldsworthy designed and sculpted this piece and busted it out so quickly. The reason I reminisce over this is - It was the first time I used a bug sprayer to paint something. My philosophy of "Right tool for the job" jokingly, got its start from this project. I carried that mantra throughout the rest of my career. When I became a project manager I often preached this philosophy a lot. Funny when little things become so significant. I also think this is when I fell in love with Mayan artwork / sculpts . I think I could make stuff of this theme for a very long time if others felt the same way. Hey, maybe I will do that now? lol.

Just a picture of a cool mural I made that was designed by Drew Hunter. Drew is an amazing designer at Sally Corp and comes from the theatrical world of New Orleans haunt. Colorful side note, he is known to many as the renowned Drewcipher. He is a very interesting human being who definitely resides on the eccentric. He was an amazing Art Director and honestly one of the best muralist/painters I know. Thanks Drew for trusting me to bring your ideas to realization back in the day.

Oh The T-Rex, and of course this was a Sally Corp icon for many years, and I suspect influenced by the original Jurassic Park Movies. I was lucky to work on them mostly because they were a best seller and everyone was getting tired of making them. This was my first time working directly with John Elwood on a project. Silicone was a new medium to me and such a cool stinky substance to work with. However it does start to breakdown in the elements so we were on a maintenance cycle to repair them as needed. After a while I began to understand why everyone groaned when it came up at production meetings. lol.

This was a good project for me in regards that I was not the first artist selected to get it done. The company I worked for hired these Orlando artist to come in and razzle dazzle us with their greatness. on top of that they were both named Brian. We then referred to them as the the Brian's, and I went by Roman for a while. I was a little nervous and at the same time a little hurt by the way this was presented to us as if we were second rate. I however swallowed my ego/pride and have to acknowledge the Orlando artist must be great to make it in Orlando and I should be open to them joining the team. In this case not they were not the miracles of magic they were thought to be, and with in a couple of days I was asked to see what I could do with these fish sculptures. The competition brought out the best in me and I actually did really well and developed a technique that was repeatable. A couple of weeks later the Brian's were added to the installation team and that was that. They ended up doing really well in this capacity. I became Bryan again. lol.

This little birdie was all foam with an aluminum frame core. Then just paint because it was out of the guest interaction zone. Luckily it fit through the doors for installation, lol. This was done by the talented sculptor Russell Hall. It was as big as the area he was sculpting in which I found to more humorous than he probably did. I was the project manager for this endeavor and I knew Russ was looking for work and was so pleased to bring him on to do this piece. Shortly after that he returned back to Sally Corp to continue his career there. Great Job Russ and thanks for making me look good.

Just when your getting use to something, or really good at it, it is time to move on. I really enjoyed my days as an artists for Sally Corp but my growing family needed me to start making more money. Of course I pressed my luck there but the truth is that it is so good there, that nobody really leaves, and therefore forward advancement is hard to come by. Just like that I was off to other adventures working with other companies. This was one of my last mural facades I made and probably one of my favorites. I wish I had better pictures to share but back then everything was film and not digital. Cheers to Sally and all those who remained and made it a career.

Sign, signs, every where are signs? I have done my fair share of signs over the years, but most of them where at Pizzazz Scenic, which was originally a sign shop. As I was starting there, they were doing a sign package for a brand new high end golf resort. In short every sign was custom and there were many different looks. This was probably one of my favorite signs, completely made out of urethane sign foam to look like a carved wood sign. Overall they had more of a team approach to their projects which I enjoyed. As a result I even got to help out with some off the installations on this one.
