RSVP really means répondez, s’il vous plaît. It is French for “please respond”. Let’s walk through some easy ways to handle RSVP etiquette like a pro! ✉️
For guests:
1. Be sure to reply as soon as possible, preferably within a few days of receiving the invitation but certainly by the date given on the invitations. The hosts have many moving pieces before an event, especially if it is a wedding, and having an accurate headcount makes all the difference!
2. How your invitation is addressed will tell you who is invited. If it is a more casual party, the indicator will be how the envelope is addressed. For a formal affair, the inner envelope will show who and how many are included. If it is just your name, then RSVP just for yourself.
3. Use the preferred method given to provide your RSVP. If there is an envelope included, that’s your ticket to going! Otherwise, they’ll have it stated as text, email, or even an app/website submission.
4. Stick to a yes or no, unless you have extenuating circumstances that can be communicated to the host. Clarity is always a good thing!
5. This is optional, but it is always fun to acknowledge an invitation by a quick text to host! The USPS is not always the most reliable so confirmation that invitations have been received could be a huge load off the mind of the sender. Besides, who doesn’t love hearing that their invitations have arrived, and their recipients loved them?!
For the host:
1. Give clear action steps. Provide the method and reply by date to your guests. Factor in the time needed before you event to finalize headcount.
2. Always supply the necessary information and items for your guests. Include your pre-addressed and stamped reply envelope, or if you are going through a website, provide a clear link with instructions.
3. Use incognito ink or a pencil to write a coordinating number on the back of your reply cards. There are always a few people who forget to add their name before mailing it in ;)
