To those who love CV surgery, POCMA vs. M&M in the analysis of mortality event provides insight into the context of the phases of care, and then to categorize the root cause as either avoidable or unavoidable. It is important for institutions to look at the phases of care: 1. Pre-operative, 2. Intra-operative; 3. Post-op ICU care; 4. Post-op Floor Phase; Discharge Phase. In my opinion, the added value is that it will be easier to work on how to resolve avoidable challenges in meeting STS metrics.
