Two businesses of the same size can warrant very different security postures.

A dental practice holding patient records, a financial advisory firm under FTC Safeguards and a property management company running a dozen sites all face real risk, but not the same risk. The honest answer is that the right posture for one would be overbuilt for another and thin for the third.

So we start with what a partner actually holds and what would hurt if it were unavailable, rather than starting with a package. Confidentiality, integrity and availability are the standard we work back from.

The most useful hour in a provider relationship is usually one where nothing is broken.

Business Reviews are that hour. They are where a partner sees what their environment actually did over the last quarter: what failed and got caught, what is aging toward replacement, where spend went, and what should change before the next quarter rather than after it.

Without that, technology decisions get made at the worst possible moment, which is the moment something stops working.

ByteTime builds those reviews into how we steward every partner, at every tier.

Most businesses do not go looking for a new IT provider when things are calm. They go looking after a bad week.

That timing is the problem. The questions worth asking take a while to ask well, and nobody asks them well while a server is down.

Worth knowing before you need to know it: what the agreement says about response time versus resolution time, what the security layer actually consists of when described as capabilities, who holds your data and backups if the relationship ends, and how quickly you would get them.

Our buyer's guide walks through those questions, including the ones providers would rather not be asked.

Two weeks ago we published a guide to the cybersecurity risk assessment. The response that kept coming back was some version of the same sentence: no provider ever explained what we'd actually get.

So the guide says it plainly. What an assessment examines, what you are holding at the end of it, and why a monthly number built from one holds up when you push on it.

Read it even if you never work with ByteTime. Especially then, maybe. The point is that you can walk into a conversation with any provider knowing what to ask for.

Every provider says it. 'We take security seriously.' The way to know whether that sentence means anything is to look at how the relationship starts.

We published a plain-language guide to the cybersecurity risk assessment: what it examines, what it produces, and why every serious framework starts there. If a provider quotes you a number without one, you now know what that number is missing.

Two weeks ago we published our buyer's guide for choosing a managed IT provider in Houston. The most common response: "I wish I'd had this before my last contract."

That's the outcome we wanted. Whether you work with ByteTime or anyone else, go into your next IT decision with the seven steps, the five questions, and the red flags in hand. And when you're ready for a real number instead of a guess, the path is a short conversation and a risk assessment.
