🛩️ Week 3: Get Your Part 107

If you want to get paid to recover deer with a drone...

This is where you start.

If someone pays you to fly, the FAA requires a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.

That means recovering a wounded deer for a paying customer isn't a hobby—it's commercial drone work.

The good news?

It's a lot easier than most people think.

The exam covers things like:
✔ Airspace
✔ Weather
✔ FAA regulations
✔ Safe flight operations

Most people spend a couple of weeks studying and do just fine.

Most recovery calls happen after dark.

Under Part 107, night operations are allowed as long as you're following the FAA requirements, including using an approved anti-collision strobe when required.

Plan for night operations from day one—not after your first phone call.

Do this first.

Call your state wildlife agency.

Here's why.

Not every state treats drone deer recovery the same.

Some states allow drones to recover a downed or wounded deer after the shot.

Some don't.

Some require permission.

Some have rules that can change from one legislative session to the next.

And here's one thing we won't ever blur the lines on:

Using a drone to locate live deer before or during a hunt is not what we do.

Our focus is ethical recovery after the shot.

If you're serious about building a deer recovery business, your first investment isn't a drone...

It's making one phone call.

Call your state game commission.

Ask specifically about using a drone to recover a downed or wounded deer.

If they'll provide the answer in writing, even better.

That one conversation can save you a lot of headaches later.
