I finished a website review for a client a couple of weeks ago. It's the perfect example of the power of a review!

The website was already professional, welcoming, and visually polished. The branding was consistent. The photography was excellent. Google had already indexed the site.

My role wasn't to point out everything that was wrong.
It was to find the opportunities that were easy to miss.

Sometimes that meant helping a first-time visitor feel more comfortable booking an appointment.
Sometimes it meant connecting a homepage section to the right service page.
Sometimes it meant identifying simple SEO improvements that would help both visitors and search engines understand the business better.

That's what I love about website reviews.

They're strategic, practical, and personalized. My goal is to help you understand what's already working, identify the changes that will have the biggest impact, and leave you with a clear plan you can actually implement.

If you've been wondering whether your website is working as hard as you are, I'd love to take a look.

“There is no such thing as a complete expert.”

During this conversation on The Motivatarian Exchange, Erin Schlarb of Hemlock Strategy and Design reminded us that no one has every answer—and no one builds something meaningful alone.

Whether you’re starting a business, navigating technology, or simply trying to figure out your next step, you don’t have to know everything before you begin.

Sometimes the greatest act of courage is simply asking for help.

As Erin shared, there are people who have already solved the small problem you’re facing. There are free resources, generous mentors, and experienced guides who are willing to help.

You don’t have to carry it all by yourself.

The right conversation can change everything.

If you’ve been waiting until you “know enough” before taking your next step, let this be your reminder:

Reach out anyway. Ask anyway. Start anyway.

May was one of those months that felt like an entire season packed into 31 days

- Our oldest finished his sophomore year of college on the honor roll and spent two weeks studying marine biology in Florida.
- Our middle son graduated from high school with honors and ran his last track meet.
- Our daughter danced in her first ballet recital.
- I preached my first sermon.
- My husband completed his 25th year of teaching.
- And we continued training a very energetic puppy.

As I've reflected on all of it, one lesson keeps coming to mind:
The things we admire most are usually built through consistent effort over time.

- The runner succeeds because of hundreds of practices.
- The dancer gains confidence by showing up week after week.
- The teacher impacts lives through years of faithful service.

Businesses grow the same way.

Most meaningful things don't happen overnight. They happen one step, one practice, one decision, one day at a time.

Here's to the small practices and steps you are taking today that will impact your tomorrow.

Many business owners assume that if their website looks good, it's doing its job.

But a website can be beautiful and still:

✓ Confuse visitors
✓ Miss opportunities to build trust
✓ Fail to generate inquiries
✓ Leave potential customers with unanswered questions

I put together a new blog post covering 12 signs your website may be helping or hurting your business.

If you've ever wondered, "Is my website actually working?" this is for you.

Read the blog at the link in the comments.

Save this post to revisit when you're reviewing your website.

A website can tell people what you do. But your About page helps them understand who you are.

Over the years, I've learned that many business owners aren't looking for "just a website."

They're looking for someone they can trust.

Someone who will listen.
Someone who will explain things.
Someone who will help them make informed decisions instead of overwhelming them with jargon.

That's the heart behind Hemlock Strategy and Design.

I recently refreshed my About page to better reflect who I am, what I believe about website design and marketing, and the types of businesses I love serving.

If we've never met, it's probably the best place to start.

And if we've worked together before, you might learn a few things you didn't know about me, including my background in technology, my family, and why a business named Hemlock exists in the first place.

You can read it with the link in the comments.

Thank you for following along and allowing me to be part of your business journey.

One of the most important parts of website design is understanding how people feel when they visit a site.

For Lily Senior Solutions, we intentionally created a calmer homepage experience.

The previous homepage had text layered over images, which made everything compete for attention a bit more.

Instead, we gave the content and imagery more breathing room.

That mattered because many visitors to this website are already overwhelmed. They may be navigating difficult transitions or trying to make important decisions for someone they love.

The website experience shouldn’t add more stress.

A great website strategy is not just visual. It’s emotional too.

Five years.

This month marks 5 years of Hemlock Strategy and Design, and I’m full of gratitude.

When I started this business, I had ideas, experience, and a hope that I could build something meaningful by helping small businesses feel more confident with their websites and marketing.

What I didn’t fully know then was just how many kind and amazing people I would meet along the way.

Over the last five years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with incredible business owners, nonprofits, creatives, and service providers. I’ve helped launch websites, refresh brands, talk through strategy, solve tech headaches, and support businesses through seasons of growth and change.

And through all of it, I’ve learned that this work is about so much more than websites.

It’s about listening well.
Helping people feel less overwhelmed.
Creating clarity when things feel scattered.
Building tools that support a business well and reflect the care behind it.

I’m deeply thankful for every client who trusted me with their business.
Every person who referred my name.
Every encouraging message.
Every project, big or small.
Every lesson that helped shape what Hemlock Strategy and Design is today.

Five years later, I still love helping business owners create thoughtful websites and marketing that feel clear, grounded, and aligned with where their business is headed.

Thank you for being part of the journey.

Here’s to five years and what’s ahead. 💚 🌲

One thing I’ve learned after working with business owners for years:

Most people do not need more pressure around marketing. They need more focus.

Many business owners already have good instincts! They already know what feels off or where customers get confused. They already know what they want their business to become.

They just need someone to help connect the dots and create a plan that feels manageable.
That’s one reason I care so much about strategy before jumping into design or marketing recommendations.

Focus creates momentum.

I hear this phrase from business owners more often than you might think:

“I don’t really like sending people to my website.”

Usually, it’s not because the website is terrible. It’s because the business has grown!

The owner has become more experienced.
The services have evolved.
The business feels more established now.

But the website is still telling an older version of the story, and that disconnect quietly weighs on owners.
They hesitate to share the link, or they over-explain in conversations.

They know the quality of their work is stronger than what the website communicates.

That feeling is often a sign that growth has already happened!

A lot of business owners think they need more website traffic. Sometimes they do.

Many times, what they really need is a clearer path once people arrive.

I’ve seen websites getting visitors every day while the business owner still feels frustrated because:
• people aren’t reaching out
• visitors seem confused
• inquiries aren’t the right fit
• or the website simply isn’t guiding people clearly

Traffic matters. But direction matters too.

Who are you helping?
What are they looking for?
What do they need to understand quickly?
And what step are you inviting them to take next?

A great strategy looks at the full picture, not just the number of visitors.
