ode to rosario avenue. you walked in the back door. you made a bee line to the oreo filled cookie jar. no questions asked. every grandkid and great-grandkid knew the drill.

grandma claire and pop-pop kept it right there on the ledge between the kitchen and dining room, between the m&m jar and that continuous loop of small plastic penguins that would climb an escalator-style staircase and then slide down a winding track. that ledge was the most sacred spot in the house to me as a kid.

this painting is my love letter to that jar, that ledge, those two and that yellow kitchen filled with cousins, aunts, uncles, so many fridge magnets, a mickey mouse clock and so so so much love and laughter. always.

in my family tree lives an anglican vicar and his remarkable wife. a woman who tended her abundant flower garden, hand painted china with the most beautiful floral motifs, smoked ci**rs, and was followed everywhere by a devoted pet duck! together they raised five daughters, three of whom became artists, and two of those sisters went on to help found/run a family pottery business in southern california that became quite renowned and is still sought after to this day.

the stories of all their paint-stained, joyful, unconventional lives were passed down to me like a gift no one had to wrap. and somewhere along the line, their love of painting quietly landed with me at an early age.

i think of them often when i paint…their blooming gardens, their paint tubes in all the colors, their wonderful refusal to be ordinary. some inheritances skip the tangible. mine came in the form of a love of uniqueness, beauty and color, and i’m so grateful for it.

when i painted this tulip field, all that joy and mess and beauty flooding toward a quiet little church in the distance, i felt the whole thread of it. the women who came before me who couldn’t NOT make things. what a gift. what remarkable ladies. cheers to them!

if the california poppies of antelope valley aren’t on your bucket list, add them right now! trust me on this one.

there is truly nothing that can prepare you for that first moment when you crest a hill and suddenly the whole landscape opens up before you filled with endless rolling hills painted in the most breathtaking shades of red, orange, and yellow, as far as your eyes can possibly see. it is one of those rare places on earth that genuinely stops you in your tracks.

and then the santa ana winds come sweeping through. suddenly the entire field is alive…dancing, swaying, moving together like they’ve all been invited to the best nightclub nature has ever thrown! there is a rhythm to it, a joy to it, that you just cannot manufacture. you can only witness it and feel incredibly lucky to be standing there.

as an artist and a lover of color, this place reaches straight into my soul. 🥰 the way the light hits those petals, the way the greens of the stems and grasses contrast against that pure california sky is pure visual magic. every time i paint them, i am right back on that hillside, wind in my hair, completely overwhelmed by the beauty of it all.

this painting is my love letter to that experience. i hope it brings a little bit of that warmth and wild joy into your world today.

painting this tiny songbird feels a bit like catching spring mid-breath. originally from asia, and now abundant in hawaii, this little lime green herald of the season is four inches of pure joy and is carrying the whole spirit of spring on its wings.

lore has it that spotting a mejiro, aka a warbling white eye, among cherry blossoms means spring has finally arrived. i actually saw these little cuties in the trees on my trips to hawaii and draw them often! miniature colorful birds? yes, please!

listen, it’s was unseasonably cold here this past weekend, and so i thought i would manifest a bit more spring and warm weather with paint! 😂 bring back those balmy temps, mother nature! the warbler and this artist are begging you!

literal inches of pure charisma, the most fabulous white eyeliner in the tree annnnd a serious nectar addiction? if this little guy can’t convince the universe to turn the heat back up, nothing can. i’m feeling warmer already!

woke up today and was having a lack of inspiration. so, to mix things up, i did an exercise where, with closed eyes, i opened up the book i was currently reading to a random page and put my finger on a word and had to paint it! “drizzle” it is! 🤔☔️💡🍩✨ so fun!!

“drizzle” took me straight to a donut. yep, not a rainy day as some would expect, but a donut! and not just any donut but the kind with that perfect swoop of white icing drizzled slowly and generously across a cloud of pink frosting. the kind where someone in the back of that bakery clearly takes the drizzle seriously.👩🏻‍🍳

you push the bakery door open and the warm air and sugary smells wrap around you like a hug. 🥰

sigh…here’s to the mornings that start uninspired and end sweet!

one trip inspires the next! 😊

planning our upcoming provence/french riviera/paris trek while replaying memories of tuscany.

🚂 train rides through the european cypress-lined countryside at golden hour never leave you. standing in their ancient rows along the hillsides, guardians of the landscape. they’re planted as windbreaks, rooted in centuries of tradition, and they live rent-free in my head.

i took a break from travel planning on one kind of paper and put down memories in paint on another. 😉 can’t wait to pack those bags! 🧳

life is short, so get the large scoop! 🍦 (and the sprinkles. always the sprinkles.) ✨

i say order the thing that makes you smile like a kid again. nobody ever looked back and wished they’d gotten the small. get the cake cone (no waffle cone for me, thank you very much!). let the sprinkles fall where they may. it’s fine. you’re living.

choosing joy in the small things is how i am opting to live life these days…summer is on its way and that means ice cream where i am from. and a large it is! this one’s painted with happy in mind and a season ahead of warm nights visiting the local creamery. 🥰

ok, time to put the paintbrush down and get a snack! 😂

🍋✨ every lemon i’ve ever seen in my life, every single one, makes me think of my aunt nancy. ✨🍋

my once titian haired aunt loves a lemon…on her linens, her throw pillows, her ceramics, her art! she has been a master gardener and would grow a garden so lush, fragrant and fabulous, it could stop traffic. (side bar: she even once worked as an assistant to movie legend, john wayne!!) and what a great laugh! she fills every room she enters with beauty and life. and we are all the better for it! in my humble opinion, she has absolutely, completely, magnificently lived.

and somewhere along the way, she quietly changed mine. it was via her walls, hung with two original, large commissioned paintings, that i first discovered the art of laguna beach artist vincent farrell and had that teenage lightning-bolt moment: wait, you can actually make a living doing this?! a glorious visit with her to his studio gallery that same summer, and i forever considered myself a bonafide member of the artist community, lock, stock and barrel, and have not looked back since. 🎨

my aunt nancy was my original influencer, long before that was even a word. this little lemon painting is drenched in sunshine and painted straight from my heart to hers. 💛

life is a lesson in balance. not the perfect, aesthetic kind of balance they talk about on hallmark cards or in my yoga wind downs but the real kind. the messy, figuring-it-out-as-you-go kind.

sweet AND salty. dark AND light. two things that seem like opposites, completely tangled up together and somehow more perfect for it.

maybe that’s the whole thing. maybe balance isn’t about having equal amounts of the sweet and the hard. maybe it’s about letting them coexist. leaning into BOTH.

so i painted it. slowly it came to fruition in my mind AND quickly it came to my canvas by brush. i’m balanced for today. tomorrow, i start again! huzzah!

spring has been elusive this year, peeking in, ducking out, leaving us guessing, but i think she’s finally decided to stay. 🙏

the trees outside my studio are properly blossoming now! flowers are popping up like they have somewhere to be! and the birds? oh, the birds are absolutely losing their minds with joy!!! i had my studio window open while capturing this little visitor on canvas and i swear he had a chorus of cousins singing in the trees and bushes nearby.

my new painting of this tiny, confident, very happy birdie perched on a branch and soaking it all in…same sir, same! happy to be here! to sit, to appreciate, to feel the sun on my face.

here’s to open windows, paint-stained fingers, and a spring that’s finally, truly here. 🎨🌿

some places hold you before you’re even born.

my mom moved to san francisco’s sunset district with my dad when they first were married. when she was pregnant with me, she got a part-time job as a secretary at the Presidio, and every day on her lunch break she’d walk to the Palace of Fine Arts, find a bench, and sit quietly with a sandwich and a view of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. and she’d write lists — baby names, carefully considered, one after another.

i came into the world already having been there, in a way.

i’ve loved that place my whole life without fully understanding why. now i think i do. and i’ve brought my own kids there throughout their lives when we are in town. they love that rotunda the same way i always have, like something in them recognizes it too.

this painting honors her. that bench. and all the dreams dreamt there — some of which turned out to be me, and then mine.
