On-site tech support means getting to meet the whole household.

Sparky was on duty during today’s Nerdy Neighbor visit and clearly took quality control very seriously.

Carroll County Sheriff's Office: Arrest/Fraud Alert

On May 21, 2025, Carroll County deputies were called to Equity Bank in Eureka Springs regarding a reported fraud case. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a senior citizen had gone online to cancel his yearly subscription to Norton LifeLock. However, it is believed the website he visited was fraudulent and designed to mimic the official Norton site.

After the victim believed he had successfully canceled the subscription, he received a phone call from a suspect posing as a Norton representative. The caller informed him that his bank account had been charged a $300 annual fee and offered to help him process a refund. The victim then allowed the suspect remote access to his home computer.

During the refund process, the victim attempted to type in $300.00, but due to a malfunction or trickery, the decimal point did not work correctly. The following day, the fake Norton representative called back and claimed that $30,000 had been refunded instead of $300. The scammer then showed the victim a falsified bank statement to "prove" the overpayment.

The fraudster instructed the victim to withdraw $29,700 in cash and said that a Norton “agent” would come to collect the money. Someone did, in fact, arrive at the victim's home and picked up the cash. This scam occurred again a few days later, and more cash was delivered.

After learning that the fraudsters were planning a third attempt to collect an additional $38,000, deputies set up a two-day stakeout to catch the suspects. On May 22 at 3:05 p.m., a person posing as a Norton LifeLock “agent” arrived at the victim’s residence. Wenyuan Song was taken into custody at that time. Song is currently being charged with 3 counts of Class B Felony Theft. His bond has been set at $100,000. He also has a Federal hold.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office urges citizens to exercise extreme caution when dealing with individuals who request access to your banking information or computer systems, especially if they are unknown or unverified. Computer scammers often prey on senior citizens, taking advantage of their trust.

This screenshot is what a real-world online Scam looks like.

* Always take note of the address in the address bar. If it's something unusual, misspelled, or just downright weird, that's a good sign it may be unsafe.

* Do not call the number. Once they get you on the phone, they will attempt to coerce you into providing more personal information. These people do this all day long, and they are very good at pressuring and scaring people over the phone into providing sensitive information.

You may be surprised to learn that they do not need to have a virus installed on your computer or phone in order for this to happen. As you visit websites, they leave little files on your device. These are usually helpful, or at least harmless, but sometimes they are malicious.

Be careful to only visit reputable websites, and if something doesn't sound right, please ask a friend or professional for a quick second opinion.
