Have you ever watched a Great Blue Heron take flight?
There is something almost prehistoric about it… the slow, powerful movement of those enormous wings, the elegant stretch of its long neck, and the way it seems to glide between earth and sky. Every time I see one, I still stop and watch in awe.
When I first moved to Colorado, one of the first birds that captured my imagination was the Great Blue Heron. I remember seeing one standing at the edge of a lake and thinking, “What is that incredible creature?” It looked like it had stepped out of another time.
Over the years, I’ve become a little obsessed with these magnificent birds. I love watching them along our ponds, lakes, and rivers; standing perfectly still, patiently observing, and then suddenly taking flight with such incredible grace.
I’ve always felt that seeing a heron is a little bit of good luck… a quiet reminder to slow down, pay attention, and appreciate the beauty that is right in front of us.
This fascination eventually found its way onto my canvas. 💙
Do you have Great Blue Herons where you live?
