An API connects your services. But what else could it expose?
For fintech companies, APIs connect payment systems, customer accounts, financial data, and third-party applications. A small security gap can create risks far beyond the application itself.
Before launching a new API, here are three areas worth checking:
01. Broken Access Control
Can a user access another customer’s account or financial information by changing an account ID or request parameter? Every API request should enforce the right permissions.
02. Sensitive Data Exposure
Does the API return more information than the application actually needs? Exposing account details, personal information, authentication tokens, or internal data can create unnecessary risk.
03. Weak Authentication & Rate Limiting
Can attackers abuse weak authentication, stolen tokens, or unlimited requests to access accounts or overwhelm services? APIs need strong identity verification, appropriate rate limits, and abuse detection.
The bigger picture?
An API can work exactly as designed and still have a security weakness.
That’s why security testing before launch matters. Identifying these gaps early helps fintech teams protect customer data, reduce business risk, and build trust into every transaction.
Build fast. Test thoroughly. Launch with security in mind.
