Just wanted to express all the thanks in the world to everyone who came out to the show and got pics and shared it… I was so busy I didn’t get the chance! I’ve been working all weekend but everytime I’ve checked my phone, it’s nothing but love for the work I did. I’m also really stoked I got the opportunity and the space it happened in at HomeFire Gallery shout out to Rob & James who are super solid dudes to work with. This was a goal I had this year that I’d forgotten about because of my insane work schedule. And then just as I detached, the opportunity presented itself almost randomly. This has been a very transformative experience for me as a mask maker. When I put all of these on display, I had to hang my own mask up and let people see me which is not what I’m used to but I’m damn proud I got out my comfort zone.
I got aboutttt 300$ in profit so I donated 25% to A.S.K. An organization that helped my family out so soooo much when my sister, Doris Gowen, was sick with cancer. I still have some posters and shirts left over I’m trying to get rid of and will continue to donate to them as they sell. My sister and A.S.K. Basically are responsible for me becoming an artist. She ultimately passed away in 1999 at the age of 13 when cures for leukemia were still experimental but I know in my heart her death was not in vain and the research from the trials she underwent went on to save so many children’s lives. That experience witnessing my sister sick gave me the resources so many years ago to cope and heal using art as my outlet. I’d trade it all to have my sister back and have memories of her healthy and well, but if A.S.K. wasn’t around, I just don’t know where I’d be.
Grief is such a wild thing to navigate and I had to learn before I even knew how to read. But to love someone (esp as much as I LOVED my sister) is to accept that pain. I’ll never stop telling my sister’s story or sharing her legacy just like how Jason will never stop coming back to avenge his mother. Thank you to everyone for bearing witness and supporting my work in my creative endeavors and healing journey.
Love,
Heidi
