Being locally focused also means making sure the needs of rural Southwest Kansas are represented in Washington, D.C.

During regular visits to our nation’s capital, United leadership joins other rural telecommunications providers to meet with members of Kansas’s congressional delegation and their staffs — including Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall and Congressman Tracey Mann. These meetings give us an opportunity to share the realities of serving rural communities and discuss legislative and regulatory issues, including the future of the Universal Service Fund (USF), that materially impact our ability to sustainably serve high-cost rural areas.

These conversations allow United to bring the perspective of our member-owners, customers, and communities directly to policymakers and help ensure rural needs are part of decisions that can affect the availability, reliability, affordability, and long-term sustainability of essential communications services.

During Co-Op Month, we’re excited to share a new opportunity for students who are United Telephone Association, Inc. cooperative members or who reside in a member household. United is participating in the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Scholarship Program, helping students from rural communities pursue postsecondary education.

The program is open to graduating high school seniors and non-traditional students, with scholarship awards ranging from $1,000 to $9,000 based on several criteria. One application qualifies students for all available FRS scholarships.

The FRS General Scholarship is currently $2,500, including a $500 contribution from United when an eligible United-sponsored student is selected.

Applications are open now through February 15, 2027.

Please note upcoming reconstruction work near United Plaza in Dodge City. During this period, our entrance on 14th Avenue will remain open, providing access to our United Plaza retail store and our awesome friends and neighbors at United Plaza. Thank you for your patience during the city's reconstruction work!

Starting Tuesday, October 20, Building Solutions will begin reconstruction work on a section of Soule Street, beginning at the intersection of 14th Avenue, as shown on the map below. This will be the first of two phases of the project and is expected to take approximately seven weeks to complete. Construction work will include the removal of existing asphalt pavement, treatment of the subgrade, installation of a new underground water line and water services, construction of new concrete sidewalks, and placement of new concrete pavement.

During construction, residents within the project area will temporarily lose access to their driveways. However, off-street parking will be available in the areas highlighted in blue on the map below. The City of Dodge City Sanitation Department will continue to provide curbside trash service on the regularly scheduled collection day, and mail service will not be affected.

When traveling through or near the construction area, please use caution and be alert for construction equipment, loose or shifting soil, freshly placed concrete, fresh tar sealant, and other work-related hazards. Please follow all posted traffic control devices for your safety and the safety of construction crews. If you observe an unsafe condition or another issue that warrants attention, please contact Building Solutions at (620) 225-1199.

Going the distance for rural communities. 👟

United sponsored our employee participants in support of FRS and the work it does to strengthen rural communities. Funds raised through the 5K support scholarships, community grants, and the FRS Youth Tour—programs that create opportunities and help sustain a high quality of life in rural America.

One distinction of a cooperative is that member-owners elect Trustees to represent them and help guide the organization.

United’s Board of Trustees brings local perspective, experience, and leadership from across the communities we serve — helping ensure the cooperative continues to make decisions with the long-term interests of our members and Southwest Kansas in mind.

During Co-Op Month, we’re proud to recognize the Trustees who give their time and service to United and our member-owners.

United may provide communications services, but we’re built a little differently than most providers. As a cooperative, United exists to serve its local members — not outside investors.

That means eligible member-owners have a voice in how the cooperative is governed, elect Trustees to represent them, and may share in the cooperative’s financial success through capital credits.

It also means our focus stays close to home. The decisions we make, the networks we build, and the investments we make are centered on the long-term needs of the people and communities we serve in Southwest Kansas.

That local focus has been essential to United from the beginning, and remains our guiding principle 75 years later.
