1️⃣+3️⃣ Final result 2️⃣ Satisfying wipe-off of sawdust. Def some details that bug me as a recovering perfectionist (and would try "for my" in a diff location), but a great first experience and now I have a support for 4️⃣ Wozzie 🌴

Final thoughts:
+ My love for combining messaging and letters in a fun way with special attention to details is something that keeps showing up—maybe this is a piece of my next chapter?
+ I have the experience to understand balance and composition and intentionally broke some rules to emphasize legibility, but the new format is its own beast. I'm uncertain how many would appropriately value this ex*****on when done by an expert craftsperson, and I can't help but think digitizing and laser etching would bring my idea out in a much cleaner, more refined way while potentially lowering price and labor involved. Laser etching definitely also has a very different aesthetic than the rustic, hand-done way and I believe would appeal to different demographics.
+ This brings back to mind the question of AI's role as an assistive vs replacement technology. I'm at more peace now with how things may shift and my potential relationship with it.

Process: 1️⃣ tracing paper refinement, 2️⃣ time lapse (x120!) of burning

Lessons:
+ Every stage will ask for an adjustment. While a PIA, it's a good thing! And much like life, you can handle it and be better for it 🙌
+ Guilt will tell you not to have fun or else it doesn't count as working. You are living the dream for a moment, and your loved one is happy you are having fun too 🤯. S**U, guilt!
+ Deepened respect for wood-crafters 🙇‍♀️. Should have sanded before sketching. The grain demands to be recognized and cannot always be plowed over—kerning be damned. The tool will burn wood even from proximity instead of only with contact. No aspect can be rushed.
+ Future growth: refresh calligraphy implications on type. Question extent of desire to blend negative space, fun squishy shapes, and letterforms 🙃

Initial sketch. said to pick a deadline + today's mine. Needed to stake our giant monstera 🪴, thrifted a paddle and a wood burning tool, nvm that i never did this before, just dove in!

While burning away (apparently there is a max speed limitation), I kept thinking about AI and craft and expertise and the future of design and my own career...
+ How much time can I give?
+ How much can the ave person appreciate true expertise and craft over accessibility and price?
+ How much do I want to educate vs source work vs purely create?
+ Where do my values align with what I can make?
+ What are my bucket list projects?
+ Where can I find my people?

Anyway, LMK if you're still a plant parent this many years after covid! 🙋👇

👏 I'm seeing ppl ask for proof the project wasn't done by AI...making things extra annoying bc ironically AI is originally stolen from artists 🥲 If I were a robot, would I have tortured myself to relearn AfterEffects in 2 days to put together a shoddy 48 sec reel all for a timed montage to Aaliyah and a 👩‍🍳😘 transition b/w my design and the real thing? Only a human full of stubborn curiosity and a deep desire to create would do something so stupid! 🤣 Anywayz here's my for my notecards! 🔊 on for add'l extremely human narration! 🤢

The other irony is I recently failed Kohl's captcha like 10x just trying to get discounts 😬 I blame buggy image maps but maybe I AM a robot... 🤔🤖🤣

How do these help support commUNITY and connection? It tells Chinese American recipients who have always felt invisible or erased, "I see you." It embraces the culture and says to any recipient, "It is good, everyone is welcome and there is something for everyone, and we can and want to celebrate together." It supports this intersectional artist 🙋‍♀️😂 And if you send it to your local reps you can get their attention, show them America looks like the melting pot we grew up living in and loving instead of the one they want us to fear, and then demand the change we so badly need! 📣👏

Climbing back in that saddle and whooeee 🥴 BUT I made it! Physically and figuratively 😅 Here's a of 2026's notecard: a horse is kicking things up a notch with powerful energy, painting a traditional fú using its ponytail as a giant calligraphy brush and spreading well wishes and good fortune everywhere. The matching zodiac seal wishes your recipient a "mǎ-velous new year" ("horse" in Mandarin is pronounced "mǎ") ;)

SHOP OPENS TOMORROW EVE, don't trust the algorithm CHECK IN! LNY is Feb 17th (less than a month away!) and I'll ship by last week of Jan God-willing 😂

And now a funny traditional Chinese calligraphy memory: I signed up for a class after Chinese school when I was little, and it was interesting but I thought I could make a cuter panda 🙃 I began to do my own thing and other students around me noticed and stopped following the teacher's tutorial and started copying me. She got pi**ed and told on me when my mom picked me up. My mom decided I wasn't hurting anyone and told her to just leave me alone and let me go off script by myself 😂 I was on her sh!tlist for the rest of the class, but my mom is pretty cool sometimes 😏

O—*O*riginally I had the angle going the *O*ther direction based on letterform origins, but it felt like it was fighting the N next to it so I had it lean back. Does this angle *O*ffend? Designers sound off below 🗣👂 Be gentle though, I'm only human 😂

*O*h and explained why the O looks too small compared to the other letters brilliantly, which I will have to keep in mind if I ever make this banner again! I love learning 🤓

F—I wanted this to *F*ollow the E's design, but it was giving the Simpsons (⬅👆 for alts). I also tried one where part of the shape was made of a large square, which felt like the most incredible shnoz once executed. This discussion is now reminding me of tangrams, which I loved as a kid and wonder if it is showing up subconsciously as an adult, and now I feel I've led us on a very dizzying mental journey 💁‍♀️😂
