In April 2025, the CA/Browser Forum, the body that sets the rules for public certificates, voted unanimously to cut their maximum life from 398 days to 47 days by March 2029.

The change is phased: 200 days in 2026, 100 days in 2027, and 47 days in 2029. Domain validation also has to be repeated far more often. In practice, certificates will need renewing roughly every six weeks, with ownership reverified nearly every time.

The intent was deliberate. The 47-day limit was chosen specifically to make manual certificate management impractical and force automation. The teams that already have a complete certificate inventory and automated renewal will barely notice the change. The ones that don’t will meet each phase as a fresh round of outages, usually from a certificate nobody knew they had.

Apple has published a detailed update on how it’s handling post-quantum cryptography, with separate plans for web traffic and email that will reshape how certificates are issued and managed.

For web traffic, Apple is moving away from traditional certificates. Testing showed that forcing post-quantum signatures into today’s certificate format causes major slowdowns during the connection, because the certificates become roughly ten times larger. Apple’s answer is a new format called Merkle Tree Certificates, with a 7-day maximum life, multiple signatures per certificate, and FIPS 140-3 Level 3 hardware requirements for the keys that sign them. Applications to run these new CAs are expected to open in late summer 2027.

For email, Apple is keeping the traditional format but adding composite signatures that combine a post-quantum algorithm with a classical one. The operational takeaway is significant: 7-day certificates and higher hardware requirements are a fundamentally different way of running a certificate authority, and manual processes won’t survive it.

Cloudflare has announced it’s building a post-quantum Certificate Authority based on Merkle Tree Certificates, targeting inclusion in Chrome’s new quantum-resistant root store in early 2027.

The challenge isn’t just the algorithm. Post-quantum signatures are far larger than today’s, which creates scaling problems across certificate issuance, transparency logs, monitoring, and browsers. Cloudflare’s approach groups certificates into a Merkle tree, signs the root, and validates individual certificates with compact proofs, and builds transparency into issuance itself.

The bigger signal is a shift in how the industry thinks. For years, the post-quantum conversation has been about algorithms. This is about the infrastructure of trust itself. For anyone who runs a CA, issues certificates at scale, or manages machine identities, the implications reach certificate transparency, issuance, and long-term PKI architecture.

The PCI Security Standards Council has released the Key Management and Operations (KMO) Standard v1.0, the first unified standard covering the full lifecycle of cryptographic keys in the payment world, from generation to destruction.

Until now, key management requirements were scattered across multiple PCI standards. KMO v1.0 consolidates them into one framework with a modular “assess-once-use-many” approach that covers PIN, P2PE, and future data types in a single assessment. It also directly addresses cloud and remote HSM deployments, aligning with the new PCI HSM v5 requirements.

For any organization handling payment data, this is both an opportunity and a deadline. It gives security teams a clear benchmark to measure against, and assessors a single framework to judge them by. The v1.0 requirements, test procedures, and program guide are available now in the PCI SSC Document Library.

On September 21, 2026, NIST moved every remaining FIPS 140-2 certificate to historical status. This includes the HSMs protecting Root and Issuing CA keys across government and regulated industries. After that date, federal procurement requires FIPS 140-3 validation.

The hard part is the timeline. FIPS 140-3 validation currently averages 542 days from start to finish. For any HSM, PKI, or key management vendor selling into government or regulated sectors, the transition window has effectively closed for anyone who hasn’t already started.

What’s left is managing the gap: how long you’re running on modules that no longer meet the bar, and what your plan is to close it.

For teams that need compliant HSM infrastructure now, a managed service that already carries FIPS 140-3 validation can cover Root and Issuing CA keys while your own modules go through the process.

Most of us treat MFA as the finish line: turn it on, and you're safe. Attackers have quietly moved past it.

When you log in and clear MFA, the site hands your browser a session token, proof that you already passed security. Malware called an infostealer copies that token and sends it to an attacker, who loads it into their own browser and picks up your session right where you left off. They never see your password and never trigger an MFA prompt, because the system believes authentication already happened.

The fix is smaller than it sounds. Log out of important accounts when you're done, rather than just closing the tab. Logging out ends the session for good; closing the tab can leave it alive for weeks, waiting for someone else.

In 2025, infostealer malware infected roughly 11 million machines and fed billions of stolen sessions into criminal markets.

Certificate renewal should not end with a notification.

With CertSecure Manager Orchestrator for F5 BIG-IP, certificates can move from issuance to deployment through a fully automated workflow. The renewal agent pushes certificates and private keys directly to F5 BIG-IP instances, updates SSL profiles, and completes the deployment without manual interface navigation or ticket-driven intervention.

One agent. Every F5 instance. Zero touch.
