Anthropic's new research on "persona vectors" solves this mystery by discovering patterns in the AI's processing that control its personality traits, much like how certain areas of our brain influence our moods and attitudes. Think of persona vectors as the AI's personality settings that determine whether it will be helpful, misleading, or prone to making up information. This discovery allows researchers to watch these personality changes happen in real time and stop problems before users ever see them. They can even train AI systems to resist developing bad habits by exposing them to small amounts of problematic behavior during training, similar to how vaccines work. Instead of wondering why your AI assistant suddenly started acting weird, we now have tools to keep it behaving consistently and reliably.
