💰 Constitutional Officers' Bonus Sparks Debate
Board Revisits Decision in Contentious Vote

A $500 holiday bonus for constitutional officers sparked heated debate at the recent Dickenson County Board of Supervisors meeting. The decision, initially excluded in last month's motion, was revisited and narrowly passed in a 3-2 vote.

While some board members argued the bonus recognizes the contributions of these elected officials, others raised concerns over fairness, citing their already higher salaries compared to other county employees.

Board Chairperson stated, "It's difficult to compare someone earning $90,000 with those making $30,000. I would not expect a bonus if I were in their position."

Despite differing opinions, the motion passed, reflecting the board's ongoing deliberations on balancing fiscal responsibility and employee recognition.

🚑 Underfunded Rescue Squad Raises Alarm
Clintwood Rescue Squad Seeks Support to Address Staffing and Salary Issues

The Clintwood Rescue Squad is facing a crisis. During the latest board meeting, representatives revealed significant challenges in retaining and recruiting skilled emergency responders due to low pay and understaffing.

Board member Brad Fleming compared local wages with neighboring counties, revealing Clintwood's paramedics make $17 per hour, far less than the $27 offered elsewhere. He warned of potential delays in emergency responses if conditions don't improve, saying, "One day, we may find ourselves waiting for help from another county."

The squad called for $200,000 in additional funding, suggesting potential solutions, including allocating casino revenue or creating a municipal rescue agency.

The board encouraged the squad to present their case at upcoming budget workshops in January.

📢 Dickenson County Tackles Potential Solar Farm Development
Commissioner Shelley Mullins Advocates for Proactive Ordinance

Dickenson County is preparing for the potential development of solar farms in the region. During the latest Board of Supervisors meeting, Commissioner of Revenue Shelley Mullins urged the board to draft an ordinance regulating solar farms.

"This will ensure clear guidelines for taxation and enforcement," Mullins stated, emphasizing the need to avoid loopholes that could disadvantage the county. She highlighted that several nearby localities already have ordinances in place and recommended the county adopt a proactive stance to secure revenue and maintain control over such developments.
