Illustration CCC Facebook home to Illustration Program at Columbia College Chicago. Columbia College Chicago’s Illustration program is accredited and nationally renowned.

Seeking to prepare a diverse student population in the most current expressions of the illustrative arts, illustrators direct their passions and careers into a variety of twenty-first century creative environments. Each degree offering at Columbia College Chicago has been carefully designed in alignment with the expectations of the professional industry. The program prepares future illustrators to

perform in a faster-paced, entrepreneurial economy and maintain a competent, confident, and creative approach to building a career. The Illustration Program serves the creative community by offering liberal arts degrees in both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA). The BFA offers a robust sequence of course credits and allows students to take the greatest range of illustration classes for a more specialized and intensive program of study. Columbia College Chicago also offers one of the only BA in Illustration degrees in the country, and is comprised of a balanced selection of courses to study in the major. This leaves ample room for students who would like to pursue interdisciplinary course options, a minor, or even a double major. The Illustration Program at Columbia College Chicago is represented by over 150 undergraduate students and over a dozen teachers. The full-time faculty represents decades of professional experience and is led by author, cartoonist, and illustrator Ivan Brunetti (Associate Professor) and Chris Arnold (Assistant Professor), who holds an MFA in Illustration and works as a commercial illustrator and fine artist. Fred Nelson (Associate Professor), who brings decades of advertising experience and Chris Eliopoulos (Lecturer), who works in film/television and on children’s books, round out the award-winning team of educators. Together, students, faculty and alumni work in harmony in the pursuit of pushing the academic boundaries of illustration to their limits with integrity and originality. RIP: RICHARD (RIC) LAURENT

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our dear colleague, professor and friend, Richard “Ric” Laurent, who taught Illustration at Columbia since 2007.

His colleague, Ivan Brunetti, remembered Ric as a thoughtful, generous teacher and artist who encouraged students to engage with the world through their work. He emphasized strong drawing fundamentals while inspiring students to become reflective, curious, and socially aware individuals. Ric shared his extensive knowledge freely, constantly challenged himself as an artist, and led by example through his dedication to teaching and lifelong learning.

Colleagues Chris Arnold and Cheri Lee Charlton also reflected on Ric’s impact. Arnold described him as a kind, thoughtful professor who helped shape Columbia’s Illustration community and encouraged students to grow both as artists and as people. Charlton recalled his warmth, mentorship, friendship, and the creative energy and curiosity he brought to the program.

Ric was a valued colleague, educator, artist, and friend whose absence will be felt deeply.

There will be a celebration of Ric’s art and life on Monday, June 1, 2026:

Visitation: 9:00–11:00 AM
Service: 11:00 AM
The Oaks Funeral Home
1201 East Irving Park Road, Itasca, Illinois

Following the service, lunch will be served at:

Angelo’s
247 N. York Road, Elmhurst, Illinois
