The résumé gets them the interview. What gets them the job?

When you’re hiring, what carries more weight: someone’s skills or their character?

Skills matter. So do follow-through, judgment, and how someone handles a mistake when nobody’s watching.

I’m working on a hiring project with a client, and I’m curious where you draw the line.

I didn’t create the mess. I just turned the lights on. 🔦

Sometimes the person who identifies the problem becomes more convenient to blame than the problem itself. 😏

But bringing visibility to broken processes, unclear roles, performance gaps, or missing accountability doesn’t create them.

It just makes them harder to ignore.

That’s part of the work I do with founders: look past assumptions, ask uncomfortable questions, find what’s actually happening, and give leadership the clarity to decide what happens next.

Not everyone will enjoy the flashlight.

That doesn’t mean you turn it off. 🔦

I’m 47.
At least for 10 more days!
Here are 5 truths I don’t argue with anymore.

Some lessons arrive gently.

Others show up with a chair. 😂

At 47, I’m less interested in proving myself, explaining myself, or holding onto things I’ve clearly outgrown.

I care more about clarity.
Peace.
Good people.
Meaningful work.
And building a life that actually feels like mine.

These are five truths I had to live before I really understood them.

And so it begins. ❤️

Leadership Snohomish County, Class of 2027.

A room full of people with very different backgrounds, experiences, perspectives and reasons for being here. We walked in mostly as strangers. Let’s see what happens over the next nine months.

Before we talk about leading organizations or communities, there’s a more uncomfortable place to start: ourselves.

How do I show up? What shaped me? What do I value? What impact do I have on the people around me?

Turns out leadership gets personal pretty quickly.

And then there was this. 😂

“Playing with Power” had us creating human sculptures to explore power, communication and relationships.

I promise it made considerably more sense when you were in the room.

Although explaining these pictures afterward is WAY more entertaining. 😂

One of my biggest takeaways from these first two days:

Leadership isn’t just about what you know, what you’ve accomplished or how well you can manage other people.

It’s understanding yourself, your impact and the people around you.

The Inner Development Goals gave us an interesting framework for looking inward before expecting to create change outward.

Two days down. A whole lot more ahead.

I’m looking forward to learning more about Snohomish County, challenging some of my own thinking, building new relationships and seeing what this group can accomplish together.

And yes, after approximately five minutes together, we have already declared ourselves the BEST. CLASS. EVER. 😉

Humility must be in next month’s curriculum. 😂

You might not need more leads.

I know. That’s not what most business owners want to hear.

Before you spend another dollar on marketing, go look at the opportunities you already have.

How many proposals are still open?

How many leads haven’t been followed up with?

How many conversations ended with “I’ll check back with them” — and nobody did?

How many opportunities are sitting in your CRM without a next step?

I see businesses spend thousands trying to generate more leads while potential revenue is already sitting right in front of them.

More leads won’t fix a broken follow-up process.

They’ll just give you more leads to lose.

Before you add more to the top of the funnel, make sure the bottom isn’t leaking.

Pumpkins(🤢 not in my house), boots, hair — easy.

Q4 goals? Still a draft.

Every year I treat the small resets as proof I’m “prepared,” then realize I’ve reorganized my closet and not my priorities.

Three years. A hundred reasons to quit. Best sushi in Seattle.

Three years ago, Sumin opened Kazoku.

I watched the hard parts. The slow nights. The years nobody posts about.

She kept going.

Now she’s a multi-year Best of Snohomish County winner for sushi, Asian cuisine, and service, and 425 Magazine and Seattle Met have both named Kazoku a top spot in the region.

But here’s the one that gets me: her team wants to be there. If you know restaurants, you know that’s the hardest award to win, and nobody hands out a trophy for it.

Congratulations, Sumin. Year three looks good on you. 🍣

Everyone is watching Seattle but Lynnwood is the one quietly changing! Easy accessible light-rail and housing going vertical!

And speaking about vertical housing, one of Lynnwood’s newest residential complexes had their ribbon cutting today. Amazing property with so many amenities we were lucky to tour today!

I went there for the ribbon cutting and left with a plan! All I can say is that something is coming and this is where we’re doing it 👀
