A few weeks ago, I received a lead through my website from a home service company looking for help with a specific service Iām not experienced in. Even though I knew I couldnāt personally help, I still reached out to thank him for contacting me and to let him know I wouldnāt be the best fit.
Iāll admit, the thought of saying, āSure, I can help,ā and figuring it out along the way crossed my mind. It wouldāve been good monthly recurring revenue. But if I went down that path and things didnāt turn out well (which was highly likely, since Iāve never done that type of work) he wouldāve wasted money and ended up with zero results. Iād be left with an unhappy client and a damaged reputation.
So, I told him the truth. I explained that itās not what I specialize in, but I was more than happy to recommend someone I trust who does great work in that specialty.
That moment reminded me that my word and my reputation will always be worth more than any amount of money.
Iād rather build a business on honesty and integrity than overpromise and underdeliver.
Thereās absolutely nothing wrong with turning down work, especially if itās not in your scope. If youāre a roofer, youāre not going to accept an HVAC service for the sake of making more money.
Hope this story inspired you all to put integrity first š«µ
