If a competitor automates 80% of the manual work, how do you keep up?

Here's a sobering thought: no matter your industry, there's almost certainly a way AI could be handling a chunk of your busywork. And if you're not using it, odds are someone in your space soon will be. When a competitor has systems quietly doing most of the grunt work, they move faster and cheaper while you're still doing it by hand. You don't need to overhaul everything — just don't ignore it. Pick one task and start.

Your website should show the value in what you do.

A lot of sites describe what a business does. Far fewer make the value obvious. People aren't just buying the service — they're buying the result, the relief, the outcome. So ask of your site: does this look genuine? Does it actually reflect what I'm trying to accomplish and the value I bring? Better than just listing features is showing the visitor why it matters to them. That's what turns a browser into a believer.

Want to stand out? Treat people better than they expected to be treated.

Everyone has a story of walking into a place expecting nothing special — and being floored by how well they were treated. That kind of over-the-top care is rare, which is exactly why it sticks. It's also free in the sense that it costs intention, not money. In a world where most experiences are mediocre, simply caring deeply about the person in front of you makes you unforgettable. Be that surprise for someone today.

Excellence isn't about burning out. It's about the opposite.

I don't chase excellence so I can grind myself into the ground. I chase it so the work gets sharp and efficient enough that you can finish a solid day in fewer hours — and still have evenings for your family, your church, the people who matter. When your systems carry more of the load, you get to be more fruitful with less. That's the goal: not more hours, but more life around the work.

There are probably 10 tiny time-leaks in your business you've stopped noticing.

Most wasted time doesn't look dramatic. It's the 15 minutes here, the repetitive task there — stuff so routine you don't even see it anymore. But list them out, and you'll often find ten of them. That adds up fast across a team. You don't have to fix all ten today. Just start writing them down this week. You can't reclaim time you've never named. The list itself is the first win.

Truly understanding someone is half the work.

What I've learned helping people solve problems is that the answer almost never comes first. Understanding comes first. Where are they now, where do they actually want to go, and what's standing in the way? Once you genuinely get that, the stepping stones become obvious. So before you rush to fix anything — for a customer, an employee, anyone — slow down and really understand them. The right solution usually reveals itself after that.

Nothing makes me click away faster than a wall of chatbots and hoops.

We've all been there: you just want a simple answer, and instead you're routed through a chatbot that doesn't get you, asked a dozen questions, made to jump through hoops before you can reach a real person. As a customer it's exhausting. As a business owner, it's worth auditing: how many steps does it really take for someone to get a straight answer from you? Every hoop you remove is a customer you keep.

The best experiences are the ones that were easier than you expected.

Think about the last time you braced yourself for a chore — some website, some form, some call — and it turned out to be effortless. You walked away thinking, 'Wow, that was easy.' That feeling is gold. You can give it to your own customers. Find the one place where people expect friction with you, and make it shockingly simple. People remember being pleasantly surprised far longer than they remember a slick logo.

You can tell when a business is the only game in town.

If you're the one crab shack in town, people will put up with a clunky website. You've got a built-in pass. But here's the trap: that pass makes it easy to stop caring about the experience. And the moment a real competitor shows up, or someone has a choice, that neglect costs you. Don't let 'they have no other option' become your excuse for a frustrating experience. Earn the visit even when you don't have to.

Let the computers do the computer things.

Here's a question worth asking about your business: what are you (or your team) doing by hand that a machine could just... do? Copying data from one place to another. Typing up the same form over and over. That work drains you because deep down it feels meaningless — you're just moving information around. The freeing part is that a computer doesn't mind. Hand it the computer work, and you get your energy back for the work only a human can do.
