The value of a session border controller (SBC) is often underestimated. You would never introduce an Internet Service Provider (ISP) into your organization without securing the service with a Firewall correct? Well SBCs provide the same kind of protection when you migrate to SIP Trunks. Unlike firewalls however, SBCs provide protection for "Real Time" traffic. Even when the SIP trunks are provided via an MPLS service SBCs are still needed. They provide security, demarcation, and a point of interoperation for internal SIP elements.
