Risograph printing is here in Boston! 🎉🥳

I recently took a risograph print workshop at shepherdmaudsleighstudio, hosted by &RISO, taught/managed by Rohan McDonald. This open access printer launched a little under a year ago; I'm so pumped that we finally have something like this so close to Allston/Brighton!

We spent the first session learning about risograph printing and how to create designs within the medium. The next class focused on printing and troubleshooting designs we made. Is a 2-layer print in black and fluorescent pink. My design came to me in a flash of inspiration on the ride home from the first session. No, I will not elaborate on it (because I can't lol) 🐠

I'm very excited to create more prints through this program, and highly recommend folks check out the membership and workshops. As a community program, every dollar spent goes right back into expanding and supporting the program and studio. Thanks to Rohan for being a great teacher and for spreading the joy of risograph in Boston! 🌠

The technique originated in Provincetown, MA a little over a century ago with the goal of mimicking Japanese woodcut techniques, but using only 1 woodcut and watercolor paints. So you paint your carving with watercolors, then imprint the design into paper with a barren (like regular block printmaking). Unlike traditional blockprinting though, the line art is the negative space left behind from carving.

I never carved a woodcut before, but have done plenty of watercolor prints, so of course I was eager to try it out! Really happy with my first go--I'm especially in love with how the colors blend together and interact with the wood grain (and how bright the linework is in comparison).

This piece in particular was inspired by a painting from the German Renaissance manuscript, The Book of Miracles (which I also embroidered on a jacket last year). Swipe through the slideshow to see how the print progressed over time!

Now I just need to get this framed and find a lovely spot for it in my apartment--preferably somewhere with a lot of sunlight to capture the little metallic details throughout ☺️

About a month ago, I visited the to paint some pottery with my friend! I was determined to complete my piece within the 2-hour reservation window and didn't plan a draft beforehand--I wanted to test myself haha 😅

There's a print design I've had in my head based around harpies and Audobon Botanical illustrations, but I haven't had time to draw it out. So of course I decided to use this opportunity to play around with the idea. The photos show the results--I love how it turned out! Looking forward to seeing how this turns out as a blockprint!

I've been spending time reflecting on all the art I created this year, (I'll have to do a full recap post); it's cool seeing all the different mediums I worked in during 2025 as we approach 2026 :)

I visited the wonderful team at today to drop off a bunch of prints (just in time for some last minute holiday shopping). Now when you visit Ritual Arts, you can find my handpainted originals, popular designs such as Dragonslayer and Chimera, & lots of little medieval guys--tons of options to pick from! Ritual Arts was the first store to host and celebrate my art, so I was very happy to visit and catch up with the team today!! 😊

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making the 4th year of running Luminoom a success! I finished my last market of the year with the Brighton Bazaar at Krampusfest, and the turnout was amazing. With my hiatus this past year due to health issues, I was a bit worried that folks would forget me or think I left the art scene... ;___;

Instead, y'all came out in full force to support me! I am especially aware that this year has been so tough due to the economy and our current administration in the USA (I grimace every time I look at my receipt after shopping for groceries and read the news 😵‍💫). So the fact that y'all still wanted to find space for my art and spend your hard-earned money at my booth really means the world to me! I'm feeling a lot of gratitude as I settle in for the winter holidays, and have SO many ideas for next year!

So thank you to everyone who has taken the time to stop by to shop, chat, and gush about printmaking and mythology with me. I'm so happy and grateful that my art is so loved and appreciated 💕
