It’s been a minute since I’ve put paint to canvas. The painting below was an experiment of sorts while I was still figuring out my style back in 2016. My wife the muse. The painting on top is of Mac Miller. There’s been a lot of trial (less error) to get to this point. Plenty of room for growth. 2021 will have more opportunities as I build on this year’s progress.

Circa 2016. Just a pic of me staring at Robert Irwin’s “Miracle Mile” at LACMA.

This serves as a reminder that all things good and bad provide meaning in a confusing and sometimes intimidating world. At the time, I was dealing with a big transition in my life. I was jobless, it was just barely a year after my sister passed, I was just finishing my degree, and my health was getting back to normal. It wasn’t until after this that I began to make art (after a two year hiatus). At first, I didn’t have a set goal for my art. Just put in some time and what will be will be. I finally brought together techniques and styles I admired and toyed with, before. It was during this time that I began to understand my direction. I used the pain I’d experienced as a force I could use to create positive change. My art gave me the positive change I needed to move forward. It was the beginning of something new and meaningful.

The following images are some of the first paintings I made after this. This style would evolve into what it is, today.

“If you’re good at something, never do it for free.” - Heath Ledger as Joker

One of the bright stars that we lost too soon. His portrayal of Joker was otherworldly. Watching The Dark Knight had me root for Joker because he was more than a villain (favorite villain btw). He may seem like a monster but he reflects the dark side of our humanity. Joker is relatable in a way we may not want to admit, because it’s honest and that’s what terrifies us most about Joker. Heath Ledger was that good! He made us believe.
