"I see about eight months here. Can you walk me through that?"
The question people rehearse least.
And dread most.
Three beats. That's the whole answer.
1. Say it plainly. One sentence, no flinching, no apology.
2. Say what you did with the time. This is where the answer is won.
3. Point forward. Land on the job in front of you, and then stop talking.
That third one is the one everybody ignores.
A short answer signals you've made your peace with it.
A long one signals you haven't.
And if you didn't take a course or freelance during it — say what's true instead. Caregiving. Health. A move. A market that went quiet.
More than one in four unemployed people in this country have been looking for over six months. The person across from you knows that.
What you cannot be is vague.
Vague is the only version that sounds like hiding.
