When I was 10 my dad owned a $5M drilling company. Then he got divorced, found out my mom had a legal claim on the business, and had nothing in place to stop it.
Nobody told him there was a difference between selling the equipment and selling the business. So he sold it piece by piece. One buyer took trucks, another took drill bits, until there was nothing left. Buyers knew he was desperate and lowballed everything.
He walked away with $500K. A 90% loss on 20 years of work. We went from wealthy to struggling in a few months.
He could have sold the whole company. He just didn’t know that was an option.
That’s the reason BizScout exists. If you own a business, know what it’s worth before you ever need to sell it.
