New medium challenges, revamping a previous subject. In my ongoing struggles with charcoal I’ve learned you cannot drop a woodless charcoal pencil, it will break. You cannot layer charcoal over graphite, it gets repelled. Charcoal is messy, wear black clothing. It will also stain computer keyboards and other works of art. Extended use has been known to reduce the life span of miners.

Ragnar. Occurred to me I hadn’t done a male warrior in a while. I had fun researching some details. The shoulder clasp is based loosely on the magnificent shoulder clasp found at the Sutton Hoo burial site. I’m still not happy with my hands, I might need to go back to anatomy basics for a few form and structure studies. Currently reading the ninth book of Saxon Chronicles.

Work in progress, preliminary sketch for upcoming collaboration with author and fellow-Texan D.A. White .dawhite, a character illustration for his latest novel!
Mixed graphite and digital. I’m still getting used to my new Cintiq monitor. I’ll be honest, after using mostly traditional mediums digital still feels very weird. There’s just some sort of disconnect I’m learning to adjust to, but I’m still amazed by the speed some artists are able to achieve digitally, so I’m challenging myself to learn what I can. An old dog learning new tricks!

Portrait practice. Smooth skin gradients are very difficult, and I’m learning (the hard way) there’s only so much you can do to fix mistakes with white ink!

I’m featured in this month’s issue of ImagineFX!! And apparently… I’m from Bulgaria!
Thanks to Mike there and the other editors for featuring me, I’ve loved this magazine for years. I remember when it first came out, and I’ve always wanted to be featured, so this is an honor and privilege. It’s a fantastic resource for artists and for finding inspiration. This month’s cover even has Dali on the front, homage to another one of my art heroes!

Portrait of Buddy Guy. 89, and still playing. Although these days people might know him as “the old guy at the end of the Sinners movie”, I think of him as the fellow who single handedly invented the style that all the early rock guitarists copied then claimed as their own! Playing here in August at . Great PBS documentary about him, support public television!

Wrath of Hanuman. One of those unfinished pieces I keep wanting to add more details to (thus the two dates at the bottom). Came across this today while going through sketchbooks, looking for specific paper qualities to try out. I miss these recycled paper pads Utrecht art supplies used to make, I wish they’d bring them back!

The Fortune Teller’s Tale. Up late finishing this. Like 3am late, fueled by an urge to finish and by the suspense of listening to the audiobook of A Case Of Mice and Murder by Sally Smith (which I also almost finished last night but will finish today because it’s too good a story). I still need practice with hands and smoke. This is an extension of my older painting the Seanchai (Storyteller).
