Do you know the difference between the CSS Profile and the FAFSA?

FAFSA determines eligibility for federal grants, loans, and work study, and nearly every college requires it, for free. The CSS Profile digs deeper, used mainly by private colleges to award their own institutional aid, and it asks for more detail than FAFSA does.

Some schools require both. Some require only one. Knowing which applies to your teen's college list early can protect real funding down the line.

Last week, a client we've worked with for over a year texted me asking if she should go to an HBCU fair. My answer was an easy yes.

She had put in the work. Month after month, we prepared her for a moment just like this one, a chance to walk in and simply be herself, and let admissions officers see exactly who she is and what she brings to their campus.
She walked away with on the spot admission into Hampton University, and admission with funding into Virginia State University.

It's only September, and she's just getting started.

This is why preparation matters. This is why showing up matters. And this is why we do what we do. We are so, so proud of her.

Last week, I visited my alma mater, Spelman College, with my family for a conversation with artists Calida Rawles and Amy Sherald. Calida is a Spelman alumna, and Amy is a Clark Atlanta University alumna. The two became close friends through the Atlanta University Center, a consortium that allows students to cross register for classes across Spelman, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and Morris Brown. Attend one college, and you gain access to three more.

I shared this opportunity with one of my clients, a student passionate about art and history, so she could see what's possible in her own future. She toured the campus, sat in on the artist talk, and met both artists in person.

This is the kind of experience a great college coach creates space for, moments that connect a student's passions to what's possible.

This past Sunday was pure joy. I got to help welcome Spelman's incoming freshmen, sharing the history and traditions of my beloved alma mater alongside a powerhouse group of alumnae spanning 1957 to 2012.

We shared our stories, offered advice, and listened to their questions, their nerves, their excitement. Watching them at the very start of their journey reminded me why this place is so special.

I can't wait to see how they grow, learn, and become the undaunted Spelman women they're meant to be. 🩵🩵🩵

This past weekend was so good for my spirit.

I got to see former clients, spend time with my nephews who are becoming such fine young men, and catch up with Spelhouse classmates. But being back on Morehouse’s campus filled me up in a different way.

Morehouse is such a powerful, unique place where young Black men get nurtured and given the space to grow into who they’re becoming. I witnessed the legacy ceremony, watching incoming students stand with their Morehouse legacy family as the torch gets passed down. Then I bumped into young men preparing for their parent parting ceremony, right there on the edge of that same journey.

Getting to witness the now, and to support these young men as they grow and evolve, means so much to me.

Like I always say, there is no place in America like Morehouse. 🏛️
