Talent Isn’t Enough ✨ - pulled artists within a similar range of monthly listeners, and all of them have very distinct feelings that lead the music.

I actually see this working across industries - leading with an energy is what’s winning today vs the thing itself.

The next step of with these three is to not change the feeling but to expand it with features, category expansion (film, sync, product collabs that aren’t just fashion) etc etc etc.

Kane Parsons, still in his early 20s, just gave A24 its biggest opening ever - with a $10M movie based on a free idea anyone could’ve used.

Kane Parsons didn’t invent the Backrooms. Thousands of strangers built it online for years.

The play: find demand that already exists, change the format using whatever your edge is, and build the audience direct so you deal from strength.

An argument to capture, not create.

DuckDuck Go is a great example of a non sexy, quiet killer consumer company.

These are personally my favorite - specifically for building around a core conviction, small teams, and profitability (with what I imagine are incredible margins).

They did two things we can all takeaway:

1 - they understood their unlock to win was getting people to switch from Google, and they nailed this.

2 - they didn’t panic in between growth spurts. Know the growth cycle the comes with your position design accordingly.

You can draw inspiration for high standard product design and experience from anywhere. If you want to make any cultural or commercial impact, it starts here.

New inspiration and insight for me came from viewing Amy Sherald’s American Sublime exhibit.

Here are my mental notes:

1. Design in reverse from a feeling.
2. Understand your process enough to know where rigor strikes the most.
3. Intimacy and connection to the viewer/user/listener/consumer comes in the small moments put together.
4. Let the work be in conversation with the person across from it. Know the job it’s doing, and then let it do it.

Please go see the exhibit for new inspiration. I think Amy Sherald is one of the greatest artists of this time. I do think she’ll go down in history books for what she’s achieved in her work.

Corteiz is a great example of:

1. A founder with a strong point of view and the ability to be patient and hold it.

2. Aligning, waiting, or moving towards the market.

Find who’s overlooked and build for them.

We should talk about the toughness of scale. But I’ll come back to it…

Today we use money as the leading communicated metric.

Money creates optionality and what you do with that optionality is what matters.

Harry Belafonte, Yvon Chouinard, Ida B. Wells, Madam CJ Walker, Anita Roddick.

To name just a few.

Part 2. Strong communities start out of the public eye.

The Fred again.. team has scales out the core positioning of “process as product” and the emotion of maker pretty damn phenomenally.

Society is growing more and more affinity not just to a process (which is why I don’t think all process content works) but the emotional waves and physical skill of making the thing.

Often times, that visual has to hold struggle, overcoming, and deep joy. It can’t be faked so you have to find it.
